I've recently been fiddling with D-Fend Reloaded in an attempt to help my uncle play a game from his childhood. However, each time he has played the game, it will not allow him to save. The error message says "cannot open data file". I believe I read something about needing to format a seperate floppy to be able to save, but I doubt that is needed when using an emulator. I have never used D-Fend or DOSBox before so all of these setting are very new to me. My apologies if this simpler than I am making it out to be, and thanks in advance for any insight on the matter.

If you have never used D-Fend or DOSBox before, what basis do you have for this assumption..?

I'll take a wild guess and suggest that you probably do need to have a separate directory mounted as drive A in order for the game to save. I for one am unfamiliar with D-Fend, so I do not know exactly how to do that.

Also, make sure that you are not playing the game from the CD, if it is a CD game.

My "assumption" comes from the fact that all [recent generation] emulation programs support savestates in some way. With that being the case it didn't seem very far-fetched at the time. I digress, the image had already been mounted and I have gone through all of the available floppy formats provided by D-Fend.

How did you conclude that savestates requires formatting a floppy? You posted that you read it somewhere.

DOSBox doesn't have savestates by default. If that's what you're looking for here's a thread where someone added it.

As Mr. Skard points out, savestates are only available in a special verison of DOSBox. But if I understand you correctly, you are presently trying to use the game's own save game feature, which is an entirely different matter and will require DOSBox to be configured correctly for what the game expects to be able to do.

It's possible that the game actually expects to have a blank floppy image available, but I have no idea how to set that up in D-Fend Reloaded. Perhaps someone who knows better than I in that matter shall post.

In the meantime, you can try without D-Fend by following the 60 Seconds Guide.

create a directory called "save" in the directory where you installed the game, and then try to save a game.

I never said anything about savestates requiring a floppy. What my sentence meant was that I doubted I would need to format anything if I was using savestates. There is a large difference between standard saving through games and savestates.

Thanks, I will try it when I get back to the computer it's installed on.
