Hello!

I've tried to install GTA unsuccessfully. I've mounted the ISO using powerISO booted DosBox 0.74, mounted C: and D: drivers accordingly, then perfomed d:\install. The install menu prompts me to install the game to the default directory c:\GTA and then the installation terminates with the following error message:

"Couldn't open Startup.ini"
"Illegal command dino.bat"

I've decided to print the Status window for better understanding:

DBer.png

Am i overlooking configurations or is it somekind of emulation error?

Thanks in advance! 😀

Use the imgmount command in dosbox to mount the cd and what was your exact mount command for c?

Same error happens using IMGMOUNT... 🙁

The GTA installer needs XCOPY in the path. You can use the FreeDOS version here (executable is in the BIN folder inside the archive) if you don't have one from MS-DOS.

Do i need to install the XCopy executable to Dosbox path or c:\GTA path?

You have to change the PATH environment variable to include the location of the executable on the DOSBox emulated drive.

For example, if you mount the C: drive like "MOUNT C C:\DOS", then put the executable in your real c:\dos folder and in DOSBox type the command "SET PATH=Z:\;C:\" before running the installer.

In your initial post you mentioned you're mounting an ISO. Maybe you meant ISO as a generic term for a disc image, but if what you have is an .ISO file then it cannot contain GTA's audio tracks. You need an image that is capable of handling mixed-mode discs, such as a BIN/CUE format image (and BIN/CUE can be directly mounted in DOSBox with its IMGMOUNT command). There may be no-cd hacks you can find that remove the cd audio requirement in the game, but you're on your own for that.

BTW, the game uses dynamic cd audio volume control to simulate the sound coming from your car's radio (e.g. lower volume when passing under a bridge), but that only works in SVN builds of DOSBox.

I've downloaded a MDF then converted to ISO, does that mean i have to find a way to re-convert it to BIN/CUE?

If you want to mount the image directly in DOSBox, you'll have to convert it to BIN/CUE rather than ISO. However, you can mount the MDF in Alcohol or Daemon Tools and then mount that virtual cdrom drive in DOSBox.

I've mounted the MDF image using powerISO then mounted in Dosbox using "mount d d:\ -t cdrom". It still doesn't recognize the CD.

Do i have to re-download a proper Bin/Cue cd image?

Yes it is but it's a windows only version which runs bugged...

I've mounted the MDS file using DaemonTools Lite instead of poweriso and now the game runs fine!

Is there a way of running it 3DFX mode?

*Edit*

Figured it out!

Thanks a bunch! 😀
