I want to record this card for the Grand Opl3 Comparison run.

I previously discussed about how i experienced distorting sound with my YMF719 cards ( had 2)
Heres the concerned thread section:
The Grand OPL3 Comparison Run!

I bought a THIRD card off ebay. A new one this time ( new old stock ) and it does the same thing. I tried it on my 486 and my Celeron 500 and it behaves the same on both system.

Heres a description of what happens for each game tested.

Duke nukem 2. FM is actually ok, until a digital sound is played. Then all hell breaks loose. First sound might be ok but then it quickly degenerates with FM and audio both spiraling into a mess of noise and distortion to eventually fade into near silence ( some static remains )

DooM: Works just fine.

Dune: Heavy distortion on some of the sounds, to the point of masking everything else. It comes gradually but after 17 sec in the palace song it becomes obvious. Eventually degenerates into complete mess. (see mp3) https://dl.dropbox.com/u/43851675/YFM719/Dune … lace-YFM719.mp3

Descent: Whole FM music sounds kind of like its underwater, volumes are off with the distortion happening here and there. Some parts are simply not right. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/43851675/OPL3SAX/Des … o%20amp%29.flac

Monkey island. Obvious distortion once again.

I tried all these games on both Celeron 500 and 486. Same thing on both systems.

So far that is 3 cards and 2 different systems and same thing happens.
I am using the Line out jumper position NOT THE SPEAKER ONE.

I am using Dos 6.22 on both computers.
I have been suspecting bad caps but the fact that the behavior is very different from game to game and the fact that now 3 cards behave the same make me thing that its not this likely .

I was hoping someone could confirm normal operation of the YMF719 on the said games. Dune is probably the most obvious to test out. Or any other though anyway.

Since you've already ruled out the amp/jumper setting issues, I'm not sure what it could be.

I haven't gotten my YMF719 card working properly yet, so I'm not sure about issues present when mixing FM/PCM sound, but standard windows/directX PCM support seemed fine (even at max volume). I didn't get SB/adblib FM compatibility working in any DOS games, but SB-Pro PCM worked and FM worked in general midi in windows (with Yamaha drivers -with default win98SE drivers it used the software MS wave midi font -soundcanvas based). I couldn't get sound out of it at all on my Shuttle AV18E for some reason, but it worked in my P5A-B and Apolloboy's Advanced ML.

I did notice weird problems in Jazz Jackrabbit. With stereo enabled (for SBPro) the right channel was distorted/staticy, and in mono SB mode the problem was there too. I'm not sure if this is a similar problem as yours, but it may be. (it's certainly different than the analog over-amp issue with speaker-out set -or using a card with discrete speaker out)

I got one but have yet to get around to using it, I will get around this weekend and load some games on one of my rigs to see if anything comes up. Check the isa connector for any dirt and corrosion, same for the card. Beyond that it could just be a cheap pcb causing the issues.
