A nice chap is offering one of these to me. If I were to use them in a future 486 setup, which one would you guys recommend?

I don't have so much expertise in the pre-pentium era. From what I've found of info it's a bit conflicting.

Actually, I'd go with cirrus logic. It was a standard, decent and compatible VGA card back at the time - and it's 2MB. S3 should not be that bad either, but I've had little experience with VLB S3 video cards.

My experience is that the S3 will be a little faster and perhaps have better vesa support, but the cirrus logic will produce a nicer image.

I'd go with the cirrus logic.

If I find 512kb video ram chips that will physically fit for upgrading the S3 card, will they work? Or are there some other specifications that will need to be met?

FPM vs. EDO (most likely you need FPM - when you get your hands on the chips just google them for datasheets)

access time might also count, but I'm not sure how much...

this is the video card i have in my Asus VL/I-486SV2GX4
im trying to install the graphics driver found on teh vogons page..

i ran the install program.. but it didnt switch my graphics to the new card + i cant find any oemsetup.inf file to be able to change it manually via windows setup.. can anyone offer any guidance on how to install the proper driver for the CLVGA542XVL ?

i exited windows + restarted "win" and it still shows "VGA" in windows setup + not a specific Cirrus Logic driver
im scrolling thru the options in windows setup and it shows GD546X but this is not the card i have.. i have the CLVGA542XL.. is there a difference? or should i just use this option?
when i tried to select the "GD546X 1024x768 with small fonts" option i get error copying files??

im thinking that to fix this i have to choose "other display" and browse to a file called oemsetup.inf.. but the posted vogons driver doesnt have an oemsetup.inf!!

i think the wrong file is linked perhaps on the vogons drivers sites? because looking at the files from the download i see a file "OEM546X.IN_"
should i just ignore that this model number doesnt match my card exactly + use it anyway?

also on my card i see some empty chip sockets.. is this for extra video ram? can i install some chips here to boost the performance of the card? or should i just ignore/dont bother?
