Hi everyone, I've been reading VOGONS for some time (on and off for some years), and I've always found good avice in the forums.
I am now building a PC to play old DOS/Win95-98 games, and I am in need of advice about what put in it, and if the hardware in my possession is enough.

I have assembled a pentium 3 866, with a 440bx motherboard. I have a maximum of 384mb.

Video Card: AGP, I have: Geforce2 MX400, S3 Savage4 Extreme,Maxi Gamer Phoenix. From what I understand the best one to use is the Maxi Gamer.

Sound card:PCI (the Mainboard has a SB-Link connector), I have a Labway Xwave with a Yamaha YMF724F-v chip, a generic (Addonics?) Yamaha YMF724F-V, and a Sound Blaster PCI 128. The Xwave should be the best one, correct?
I also have acquired a Roland MT-32 to connect to the card.

At the moment I have assembled the P3,384mb,Xwave,Geforce2 Mx400 and the mt-32. I connected the card to the mainboard with the sb-link connection.I am using DOS 7.1, and the oldest audio drivers (3.10) from yamaha.
It looks like everything is working as it should, but I need help figuring out:
When launching the game GODS, I can hear in the intro the voice and chorus, but in-game I can't hear the voices of the monsters and of the protagonist. Were they only present in the Amiga version or am I missing something? Also, if I configure it to use MT-32, I can't hear the voice or the chorus. Is this intentional?
I also can't get Prehistorik to work with Sound Blaster, it recognizes the MT32 and nothing else, and Prehistorik 2 doesn't work at all.

What games could I use to full test audio capability and 3d acceleration? What about the Maxi Gamer, is it compatible with all the 3D games from that era (DOS-W98/ME), or should I switch it with one of the others for some games?
I also have found the THROTTLE dos utility, and from what I see it does a good job of slowing down the CPU, if needed.

What are your SB emulation settings?

What drivers are you trying in the games?

Also, what are the contents of your autoexec.bat and config.sys files?

Emulation settings, as per Yamaha's SETUPDS are:

At the boot we can see:

Autoexec:

@ECHO OFF
PROMPT $P$G
SET DIRCMD=/4
MODE CON RATE=32 DELAY=1
MODE CON CP PREPARE=((850)C:\DOS71\EGA.CPI)
MODE CON CP SELECT=850
LH KEYB IT,,C:\DOS71\KEYBOARD.SYS
LH KILLER
LH DOSKEY
LH DOSLFN /Z:C:\DOS71\CP850UNI.TBL
LH SHARE /L:30
LH CTMOUSE
REM For compatiblity purpose:
LH CTMOUSE > NUL
ECHO.
REM For locking volumes to enable "direct disk access":
CALL LOCKDRV.BAT
BREAK ON
LFNFOR ON
ECHO Now you are in MS-DOS 7.10 prompt. Type 'HELP' for help.
ECHO.
PATH=C:\DOS71;..;C:\WINDOWS;C:\DOS71\norton;C:\DS-XG
chcp 437
C:\DS-XG\SETUPDS.EXE /s
SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H5 P330 T4

Should I install and load Creative's SB drivers?

Yes, try that, but first, stupid question - which card are your speakers plugged into?

Also, there's not supposed to be a H parameter on your Set Blaster line as your Yamaha card is only emulating a SBPro, not a SB16, although you will need it if you're going to try Creative's drivers, which do emulate SB16.

I have installed SB Pro 2 drivers, but nothing has changed.

What I need to know is if, in the DOS version of GODS and with an MT32,there are the same sound effects as the amiga version, and what other games I can use to test if the sound is working as intended.

Also, what about the best video card to use among those that I have? Should I put in the Maxi Gamer Phoenix for better compatibility?

Welcome to the confusing world of retro gaming 😀

Firstly you need an CM-32L, CM-64, CM-500 or LAPC-I for Gods or CM-32L software emulator for accurate music and sound effects.

There is no ISA sound card out there that can emulate the MT-32 / CM-32L.

Here is a recording I did a while ago with a CM-32L:

PS: The Amiga version is brilliant. IMO it's the best version.

Thanks for the welcome.
I agree that Bitmap Brother's games are better played on the Amiga (and I have both an A500 and A1200 to play them).

I watched your video before creating the thread, and I was thinking I could have the same sound with the MT32 + YMF724, but from what you said I won't, because I need the extra effects provided by the Roland CM line?

I thought the games would use the MT-32 to play the music and the sound card's OPL3 to play the effects?

No. Both MT-32 and OPL3 are for music.

You shouldn't need SB Pro2 drivers. By "Creative's drivers", I thought you meant SB PCI 128 drivers.

Yes that's correct.

Some games do this (MT-32 for music and Sound Blaster for sounds), especially newer ones. But most support only a single card.

Thanks. Would a SC-55mkII solve the problem?

No because that's a Roland Sound Canvas (General MIDI). Later games support General MIDI but most of the older ones support the MT-32 and compatible units.

I'd just stick with the Amiga version (Emulator) seeing some of the YT videos. The sound is indeed very nice 😀

Yeah, I'll play those games on my Amiga.

So the people who have both MT32 and SC55 use them for specific games (MT32) and better GM (SC55)?
But I have found a set of patches from Roland that makes the MT32 GM compatible and adds 64 effects. Is the SC55 still needed because it sounds better for GM?

Sorry for all the questions, I am still new to this midi pc world. 😀

Yes!

Yes you can upload patches to make the MT-32 somewhat General MIDI compatible. Emphasis is on somewhat 😀
