Hi everyone, I've been reading VOGONS for some time (on and off for some years), and I've always found good avice in the forums.
I am now building a PC to play old DOS/Win95-98 games, and I am in need of advice about what put in it, and if the hardware in my possession is enough.
I have assembled a pentium 3 866, with a 440bx motherboard. I have a maximum of 384mb.
Video Card: AGP, I have: Geforce2 MX400, S3 Savage4 Extreme,Maxi Gamer Phoenix. From what I understand the best one to use is the Maxi Gamer.
Sound card:PCI (the Mainboard has a SB-Link connector), I have a Labway Xwave with a Yamaha YMF724F-v chip, a generic (Addonics?) Yamaha YMF724F-V, and a Sound Blaster PCI 128. The Xwave should be the best one, correct?
I also have acquired a Roland MT-32 to connect to the card.
At the moment I have assembled the P3,384mb,Xwave,Geforce2 Mx400 and the mt-32. I connected the card to the mainboard with the sb-link connection.I am using DOS 7.1, and the oldest audio drivers (3.10) from yamaha.
It looks like everything is working as it should, but I need help figuring out:
When launching the game GODS, I can hear in the intro the voice and chorus, but in-game I can't hear the voices of the monsters and of the protagonist. Were they only present in the Amiga version or am I missing something? Also, if I configure it to use MT-32, I can't hear the voice or the chorus. Is this intentional?
I also can't get Prehistorik to work with Sound Blaster, it recognizes the MT32 and nothing else, and Prehistorik 2 doesn't work at all.
What games could I use to full test audio capability and 3d acceleration? What about the Maxi Gamer, is it compatible with all the 3D games from that era (DOS-W98/ME), or should I switch it with one of the others for some games?
I also have found the THROTTLE dos utility, and from what I see it does a good job of slowing down the CPU, if needed.
