Half a kingdom to the one who can come up with a solution 😉
In ye olde Official Daggerfall FAQ (http://12.145.63.45/~uesp/dagger/dagfaq12.shtml), Bethesda says that QEMM running in Stealth mode causes this problem.
There is probably something in Windows XP's memory management that is very similar that causes the same problem.
Here's an overview.

It's entirely possible that someone could use DOSBox's (or another program's) debugger to figure out what the problem is, and solve it. Maybe if you ask Qbix nicely. 😀
Question: do ANY of Daggerfall's patches make the problem disappear, if you incrementally upgrade Daggerfall and test it?
