I heard that the PC Speaker uses a PIT (Intel 8254/8253/8255) to control the beeps. Is this true? Looking through the motherboard of my IBM PC300GL, I dont see anything of an 8254, 8253, or 8255 anywhere AT ALL.

If this is not true, what does really control the beeps? Can I unsolder it not affecting the machine? Ask me anything about it.

On anything later than a PC 5150, the PIT is integrated into some other chip. In a modern computer it's probably the ICH or Southbridge.

If you want to silence it, just disconnect the speaker. If it's a piezo buzzer mounted on the motherboard, you'll just need to desolder that.
