I installed my CT2230 in my 486 last night. I installed the driver from here, just the "install" disk. This seemed to complete successfully, and I left everything at default. 220h, I5, D1, H5 IIRC.

Running 'diagnose', I can hear 8 and 16 bit digitized sound with no problem. The card also works in DOOM II and ROTT with no problem. But when I use it in DOOM(shareware v1.9), I get low volume and noisy FM synth music, and no digital audio.

What could cause the sound card to work in DOOM II, but not DOOM? Do I need to install the other disks (isapnp and dsp)?

There shouldn't be any difference since both Doom and Doom II have the same DMX sound library linked in their binaries.

Doom & Doom2 use the same engine so it is very strange not to work in both?
Sounds more like sounds not setup right in doom, moreso if your getting FM and not MIDI music
I'd say check your set blaster= line says in your autoexec.bat and enter those values into Dooms sound setup.

Could also be worth trying to download doom from another source, maybe it didnt download quite right? I've had funny things some times where everything seems ok but getting the same file from somewhere else works perfect

Yes, I think this boiled down to a spurious hardware problem. I was unable to replicate this problem last night, and the output is much less noisy now than it was when I observed the strange behavior in DOOM. I will just hope it doesn't happen again.
