AFAIK the "sweet spot" for the original Wing Commander is supposed to be somewhere between a 386SX16 and a 386DX33. Don't quote me on this though, I haven't played around too much with 386s. I do know that it runs too fast on a 486, though.

It's true, BUT the speed varies depending on what is going on (asteroids, enemies, large ships...). So you never have it "right". In DOSBox you can dynamically change the speed which helps.

The only other option is playing the Windows version.

Apart from that, 486 machines have a Turbo button and you can disable the internal cache, either in the BIOS or via Software. So in that regards a 486 is more flexible than just a 386.

Even a 486SX-16? Speaking of which, has anyone ever actually seen one of these?

It's not clear in your pics, but I hope it doesn't have a leaking (or soon to leak) barrel-type battery in there.
If it still has one, best is to remove it (and use an external battery pack).

It's fine, the barrel battery is long gone and it has an external battery pack installed for 3 years now.

Can you help me decipher this? I'm trying to upgrade the 486DX 33 to a DX2 50MHz but don't quite understand this, especialy the "&amp" 😕 Thanks

CPU TYPE CONFIGURATION

Type
JP1

80486SX
pins 5 & 6 closed

80487SX
pins 2 & 3, 4 & 5, 6 & 7 closed

80486DX
pins 1 & 2, 4 & 5, 6 & 7 closed

80486DX2
pins 1 & 2, 4 & 5, 6 & 7 closed

Ampersanded! Thanks leileilol
Edit: ops I just noticed that it doesn't matter as the DX and DX2 configuration are identical, whatever these lines mean, 🤣

You don't know what the & [ampersand] logogram means? It stands for the conjunction "and"... so in laymans terms for example: 80486SX pins 5 and 6 closed.

"Closed" pin in PC lingo means the little pin sheath covers both pins, while an "Open" pin has the sheath covering only one pin.

I edited it , the initial post was "&amp" and not "&" so I was attributing unknown signification to an error (an html one) because I did not knew the word ampersand, which we do not use in my country.
The word has a quite interesting history described in wikipedia.

Man, the things you make me write, "attributing unknown signification to an error"?! Lol, merry xmas!
