I know there is a lot of talk about the SC-55 for retro games but wouldn't any Sound Canvas work as long as it's GM-compatible? Unlike the MT-32, if it's GM then the instruments should all be in the same place.

Thanks for the link. I think an SC-88 would be nice but prices seem to skyrocket for anything newer than the SC-55. 😮

I personally find the Yamaha XG synths sound better for most DOS games but its personal preference.
I actually sold my SC-55mk2 because I was only really using my MU10XG or LAPC-I.

If you are squeamish, don't prod the beach rubble.

The thing with General MIDI is that it's a standard for instruments, so you are guaranteed that you get the correct instruments, but the actual instrument samples can vary quite a bit.

The main reason why people recommend the SC-55 is because it was the de-facto General MIDI device of the 90s.

But as DK pointed out, personal preference is up to each individual and you just wait until you dip into soundfonts 😀
