Another MT-32 problem thread 😁

Well, long story short, I think I'm having issues having the soundcard(s) communicate with the MT-32. I'm using the Gameport rig, and have tried two different retro PC builds. One with a GravisUltraSound MAX (Win 3.1), the other with a SB Live Value (Win95).

I've checked the midi cable to make sure it was seated well. After trying out a Sierra title (Iceman), and telling it to use the Roland, I'm not getting any sound. I'm also not receiving any messages on the unit itself, to indicate if a soundbank was loaded, or anything of the sort. It just sits there smiling at me.

I also tried Cakewalk Express, on my Gravis/Win3.1 rig, which loads soundbanks with the music, and still not getting anything.

I'd like to rule out any wrong-doing on my end, before I start suspecting a faulty MIDI cable.

Hold tight silentwulf, my latest YT video is just being processed.

It's over 3! hours longs and will tell you everything you need to know about the MT-32 😁

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NUQpAZeAdo

In the meantime, test with Lucasarts games such as Monkey Island 1 and 2 or Fate of Atlantis. These games will work with MPU401 UART interfaces.

If this confused you, don't stress, watch my video (several times because it's so packed with information) if you have to.

Didn't someone on here try and fail to get MT-32 working on a GUS?

A 3 hour video...Jesus!

I'll be sure to give it a watch (makes popcorn).

In/Out plugs are in properly. To also note, I'm having the same issue with a SB Live! as well, under Windows 95.

I'll try some of the SCUMM titles you mentioned.

Mau. Skimming through your videos. Found one issue.
When performing the TEST MODE, everything is fine up until "TEST VR" (After the SW test).
When it prompts me to hit Button 2, I get "Midi Recieve Error". Device is hooked into the soundcard via the Gameport, and both IN/OUT midi cables are plugged into their respective ports on the Roland.

You need 1 single MIDI cable that goes from the MIDI IN into the MIDI OUT of the MT-32. So it doesn't go into the computer at all. It basically takes the signal coming from MIDI OUT and sends it straight back into MIDI IN 😀

Hope this clears things up.

The cable I have includes both an IN and OUT plug, along with two Gameport cables (one male, the other female)

In total, the cable itself has 4 plugs total. The IN plug is in the IN port, and OUT plug is in the OUT port.

In to out. What comes OUT of your PC has to go IN the mt32 (I think maulwurf got it wrong since he writes the other way round).

Maybe this will paint a better picture of the setup;

Here is a picture showing the two connections going into the back of the Roland (minus speaker cables and power). The cables show IN & Out.

Ports on the back. Showing that the cable's IN plug, is in the Roland's IN port. As well as the OUT connections.

Back of the PC. Male Gameport hooked into a Gravis Ultrasound PnP. There is also an extra Female plug attached to the cable.

And lastly, the error I receive when going into test mode. At the point in the test where it should be producing noises, I get this error. MT-32 passes all prior tests

With that in mind, how would I hook the MT-32 up to my soundcard 😳

Did you *try* it the other way round?
Because I still think it should be the other way. The cable saying out should be hooked to the mt32 IN. The cable says OUT because it's where the signal comes out from the PC. And to receive midi the mt32 needs that signal to come IN.

I have tried swapping the cables around, but to no different results.

So basically I'd need to find a standard midi cable to try out test mode (that doesn't include the Gameport?)

What about having it work with the PC? I know the Gravis PnP has MPU-401 emulation, so I'm skeptical if it has the proper interface needed.

Here is the cable I have;

Found this older cable online too, that lacks the female DB15;

Also, I am planning on picking up a SB16 (Gravis SB emulation is terrible), probably a CT2230.

Yes you need a standard MIDI cable. And no, it won't have the joystick plug.

Ok looking at your pictures. The PC side of things is perfect! So don't change that. The second joystick plug you have is a pass-through cable, it allows to connect a joystick. Not all cables have this feature 😀

The connections into the MT-32 however are wrong.

Firstly only one cable needs to be connected and that's the cable coming from the joystick port labelled OUT goes into the IN on the MT-32.

Just like here.

The cable coming from the joystick port labelled IN doesn't get connected unless you are planning on doing some music production type work. But for the context of DOS games it's not needed.

Here the pics:

Once this is setup try Monkey Island (start it with monkey.exe r)

The cable you already have is fine (for games), just not for test mode 😀

The SB16 will work with many games, just not all of them as per my video (watch the section MPU401 UART vs. Intelligent).

Great news! Device works! Tried it with an old AWE32 card.

There are still a few minor issues. The sound is very muffled, and pops a lot.
Other then that, I get the MIDI messages (POLICE QUEST III), and sounds like a Roland should.

So it's a huge step forward 😁
