I played this game as a kid and recall really liking it, so when I saw it was on Abandonia I immediately downloaded it. I can't get it playing, however. I try to run the game with "monte", and all I get is a black screen where nothing happens. I tried going into"msetup", and I can apparently setup up correctly there, but trying the midi test and digital audio test doesn't work either. All I get is a red square with nothing in it.

Am I just hopelessly inept and doing something wrong, or is this not going to work for me? Maybe it's just the files at Abandonia? Any help will be most appriciated. Thanks!

Go bug the Abadonia forum, please.

I tried downloading the game in several different places, but no matter where I get it from, the game just won't work. Everywhere else I get the game from the "msetup" works, but "monte" STILL doesn't...

That's the thing, though. I have a physical copy, but I can't get that to work either... if downloading the game elsewhere is illegal, I'm going to delete it immediately, though. I honestly wasn't aware. Sorry about that.

The game is a little mess... I have 2 prints of it: one is a dos+win version and the later is just windows with different .exe version too... be sure that your original print is a dos/win one and not a win-only one

I've got Windows 8. Installing 3.1 wouldn't mess anything up, right?

I'm pretty sure my copy in Windows only... gah. And I checked eBay, but it's hard to tell whether the ones I see being sold include the DOS version.

I tried it out earlier... it's one of those Autorun things. You have to install it before you can play, sadly. Guess I have one of the newer, 1998 versions rather than the 1997 one. Darn...

At least some of the original versions of "Montezuma's Revenge" were booters rather than "DOS" versions. You might want to see if you can boot off the disk.

"Return" != "Revenge" ;) although they did pull a DoTT with Return by including Revenge as a bonus game.

It's a Windows 95 game. Both the 97 and 98 versions are afaik.
