Finally my card arrived, and not only the disk I connected to it was bootable, but it was visible on dos 6.22. The chip on the card is a Silicon Image 3114, and I'm sure it has it's own bios, that's why it's bootable.

Hmm that's the chip on my card!

I can get into the RAID Bios by pressing F4. Here you can build Raid arrays. Here I can also see any SATA device connected, like a DVD drive or HDD. But I couldn't get it to Boot. I admit I didn't play around much longer as I have a working solution using CF cards but will test again.

Do not buy the VIA S-ATA card. I just got it and you can't boot from it. Seems to have issues with the Win98 drivers as well.

Ok thanks. And you have this one? And it boots?

There is one company that still makes them and their main customer is the government because a lot of government departments still run on old tech.

They also still make 8" floppies, tape backup cartridges, and tape on reels.

That's amazing. I have such good memories of these floppies 😀

I admit that's weird. My card is the same. I have installed it on my Pentium III pc (QDI Advance 10F motherboard) and it boots fine. And I don't remember setting the BIOS option to boot from a SCSI device.

I have the VIA card, but I've ordered the Silicon Image as well. So far no luck with the VIA. Can't even see the disk in DOS, no bootup screen and when installing the Win98 driver the computer crashes. I will have to test some more though before I give a final verdict.

Powerleap PL-iP3 with 1.4ghz P3 😀

I hope you have a 133mhz bus machine to put it in. I had a problem when I first got my 2 and tried putting them in 100mhz bus systems and they did not report the speed correctly or run at anywhere near 1.4ghz. I had to pull the PIII's out and replace them with Tualerons to get them to work at 1.4ghz.

Already got a pin modified P3 for my 440BX system. Bought this since it was cheap and I have a Asus P2B laying around that could use it in the future. As far as I know it supports 133mhz FSB. If not, it's easy to replace the CPU.

Later 440BX's are pretty easy to run at 133. It's the best way to run them IMO, even if Intel doesn't approve.
P2B rev1.02-1.04 usually can't handle it, but rev1.10-1.12 usually run 133+ reliably. I think some of the boards have the wrong 133 jumpers indicated, resulting in the wrong PCI divider, but I don't remember which. The datasheet for the clock generator clears that up.
I'd love one of those Tualatin adapters. In the mid-2000s I saw one at a local shop for $15 - and passed on it. Stupid.

I bought a real S3 Trio 64V2/DX 2MB via eBay so that I can have a real one as well as an emulated one. DOS apps work great on it but in Windows 7, you are stuck with 640x480 and 800x600 in 16 colours, yes SIXTEEN colours due to the lack of Windows drivers and a VBE 2.0 driver in the BIOS. It has the older VBE 1.2 driver in it instead.

The other retro hardware that I have bought many years ago is a genuine Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16, non plug and play. I had to manually add the device in Windows XP. It is now sitting idle in my collection as that motherboard with an ISA slot (ABIT KT7) died and I no longer have ISA slots in any computer.

My 486 is my real DOSBox, as well as my customised DOSBox!

Oh the memories. I had one of these when they first came out. It was the CD-ROM drive for the masses! I got mine from Escom and I remember playing the 7th guest on it although it was meant for double speed.

My recent purchase:

New and 10 bucks per drive + shipping. Wondering how long they will keep making them and if we get a warning period to buy more 😀

I took out the plastic bezels and sprayed all beige before replacing them in my "classic" PCs. 😀
