5:4 panels are spawns of hell. Anachronox does not like custom resolutions, so you best play in window.

Guess you forgot to uninstall/remove 3dfx.

I actually found an option to centre the image... It puts small black bars on the top and bottom and it looks much nicer now (not a blurry off-centered mess!).

Nope. I completely removed the 3DFX drivers and then removed the remaining files and registry crap using Driver Cleaner Pro (is there anything better for Win98?). The Voodoo driver info still shows the ATI Rage Fury Maxx as the previously installed card... I've used different cards since then and thought i'd removed every trace of the ATI drivers. The driver cleaner can't find anything ATI related either 😒 .

Are they actually all 5:4? I know it's the aspect ratio of the resolution, but I remember reading that some of them somehow are still 4:3, due to how the pixels are shaped or something.

They are 5:4. Actually the height is nice for some things. But with games sometimes it causes bad uglies...

I never understood why 1280x960 is unpopular. Or 1360x1024. I found that one with Radeon 9700, I think, and it was nice on my 19" CRT.

I guess similar reason why 1366x768 is everywhere instead of 1280x720, but that's at least almost the same aspect ratio.

I'd rather play old games on those 5:4 panels than on widescreen monitors.

Just bought a cheap Gainward Geforce 3 Ti200... I heard Gainward geforce 3 cards are amongst the best for image quality. I've got no reason to keep the GF2 cards now (or even the Voodoo 3 and Matrox G400 Max) 😀.

🤣, I can see you going "bought that new GTX 680 today, great quality, got no reason to keep cards Y and X now" 😜

I already have a nicely oc'd Radeon 7950 in my current gaming PC, so no need for a GTX 680 😜... I think the Geforce 3 is the 'newest' card i'd use in my old PIII system 😀.

Dammit! I just recieved the Gainward GF3 and i can see that a very small resistor has broken off at some point! I've not tested it yet either. It's one of the resistors on the VIVO module so i'm not sure if it will affect normal use through the VGA or DVI ports... I doubt the TV-out port will work though.

Lets see what the seller says about this one (the same seller i bought the GF2 Ultra from with the broken resistor and ramsink 😒).

I got a Parhelia with a sheared off inductor last year. The guy sent me another card right away. But I don't know how someone misses damage like that. The card didn't work either.

I'm guessing the damage can occur when the postman crams it through the letterbox! The Gainward GF3 card had just a single tiny resistor missing, and it doesn't display anything at all!

The seller offered to replace it with another card, but i don't see anything of interest and i'm not getting a Radeon.

EDIT: The seller does have a 64MB Asus Geforce 4 MX440 (AGP 1x/2x/4x version)... So maybe i'll try that instead. I'm guessing it will be around GF2 GTS/Pro speed but with better image quality and i'm sure the power consumption won't be too high for this model. The exact model is 'Asus V8170DDR/D/64M Rev 1.01'.

Is passive cooling ok for a Geforce 4 MX440? The Asus card i'm looking at doesn't have a fan or even a fan connector, but i think there's a place marked on the board where i can solder a fan connector (if it's needed?). My old case doesn't have much airflow.

I had an mx440 passively cooled [that's how pny made it] in a cramped case. never a problem. Well two psu's blew up but that was a different issue. 😵

Well the case for my PIII PC is a large metal tower with a single 80mm fan at the front... I'm guessing it should be ok as manufacturers shouldn't assume that everyone has active case cooling facing the graphics card.

Its perfectly fine. As long as you dont overclock it. The actively cooled GF4 mx though can overclock insanely. 😀

That damn ebay seller ignored my request for a refund and sent an 'alternative' replacement instead without asking me 😠. I hope it's not a Radeon and i hope it's something that actually works with my mobo! They don't even know what kind of PC i'm going to use it with!

I also asked them if i could have the Asus MX440 instead, but they said they had already sent a replacement. They've not even told me what it is yet, and i had to return the faulty card at my own expense!! I have a feeling i'll be returning the replacement at my expense too if it's garbage 😒.

Oh, for the love of retro IT God, please trash the junk and use V5 5500. You wont regret it 😀

...and give him a big negative feedback too.

I probably will use the V5 5500 when i receive it (not sure when that will be though)... Although it would be nice to have a card that can handle FSAA without too much slowdown. Even a Kyro II can can handle FSAA quite well.

How does a Geforce4 MX440-SE compare to a 64MB Geforce2 GTS/Pro?

The mystery replacement card from the ebay seller ended up being a 128MB Inno3D (brand i hate!) Geforce4 MX440-SE with active cooling. I returned a faulty Gainward Geforce 3 for this... I'm thinking i got a bit of a raw deal, but my PIII 850 is still most likely to be a bottleneck, so maybe i won't notice any performance differences... I just hope the 2D is better than a GF2.

It's probably about as fast as a GF2 GTS. 2D quality will probably be just as bad, unless there's a DVI connector!
Tough luck 🙁
