I've got a Diamond Stealth 3D 4000 in my DOS machine. I seem to have everything else running fine, except for this:

TIE Fighter CD DOS refuses to start. Comes up saying it doesn't detect VBE support or something. I tried univbe 6.7? and it detects the card as a trio something. I tried S3VBE and it says it can't detect the card.

Is this card just too weird to be considered a normal S3 card for compatibility purposes? Should I try to find a 2000 pro or something to replace it?

I have a GF4 MX4000 pci I can use, and I know that's just fine VBE wise as I used it before without issues, it's just way overkill for this machine.

Any suggestions?

The game gives VBE errors in various cases not necessarily video card related. Have you tried a video card swap to be sure?

No, it's right up there with the other legendary S3 cards. 😉

Running UNIVBE 6.70 does indeed detect the wrong card, and it reduces the number of supported VESA graphics modes from 55 (original BIOS) to 35 (UniVBE), but other than that, it shouldn't break anything serious.

Even after running univbe, TIE Fighter still won't detect the right vesa mode. If I hit no to just run it in low res mode, it gets to loading tie fighter cd....then just quits. I think that may have something to do with my CD drive being drive G though, I have to look into that.
