I managed to get Silent Hunter 1 working one of my computers running a 32bit system and worked perfectly. That computers power supply blew though so I decided to play it on my 64bit system. It installed without any problems but when I try to play it in DOSBOX (no problems in setting up), the game keeps on saying that it cannot find the disk in the disk drive. I didn't have this problem with this on my 32bit system but I tried another 3 times, checking I was doing the steps correctly.

When I tried to run the cd by itself in windows (not DOSBOX) to boot the game, it says it says "The operating system denied access to the particular file". When I tried to run the execute file in my installation file, it says that the program is not compatible with my 64bit system.

I think that the problem is the 64/32 bit compatibility but other people have said that they have got other games to run perfectly using a similar setup. I couldn't find any posts which have this issue but any help would be greatly appreciated and happy to give more details.

Thanks, Audietron

Please tell us what OS you are on, 32 bit vs 64 bit is not really identifying it 😉
Then tell us how you set the game up (mountings) and how you are playing it now (mountings).
Also see the readme for additional settings when you mount the cd

I am running Windows 7 64bit on
my new computer. On both the new and old computer I wrote the following things in:

mount D D:\ -t cdrom

mount C C:\OLDGAMES

C:

cd Silent~1

sh

After all processes, the program did confirm. I cannot give a screenshot at the moment but I can upload one later. As mentioned before, I have got this to work successfully on a 32bit windows before.

cd Silent~1

This is a telltale sign that you didn't install the game from within Dosbox. Start over, follow the 60 seconds guide and maybe add the -ioctl switch to the -t cdrom (see the readme).

I tried adding the label as you suggested but I cannot install the game through DOSBOX. It says that both the installation file and CD Autorun will not run in DOS mode. I looked through the readme and tried the other cdrom labels but none worked either.

I was also wondering if I copied the disk onto a USB and tried to mount it, could it work? I'm not sure if this would have any effect but just an idea.

There are no execute, com or bat files in the cd root. The only application is the autorun

Can't confirm any of the issues mentioned in this topic. I got it to work on the first try, with the default DOSBox config file. Tried installing from the CD and the CloneCD dumped image I just made from the retail disk. Just imgmount-ed the .CUE sheet installed the game and it ran flawlessly.

Follow me closely, and I'm sure you will get the game up and running in minutes.

1. Put the disk in the drive and take note of your optical media drive letter in Windows. You can image the disk with CloneCD for faster installation speed and saving some time by not inserting the disk every time you want to play the game. The game has a CD check than can be easily bypassed with an image. Mounting the image in DOSBox and mounting it inside Daemon Tools or any other virtual drive software should work the same.

2. I made a test folder in my C:\ drive in Windows and inside the folder another one with the image I just made from the game called image. Then I copied my SH_V1_0_324.CCD, SH_V1_0_324.CUE, SH_V1_0_324.IMG and SH_V1_0_324.SUB there.

3. Launch DOSBox and set the cycles to max by typing cycles max and hitting enter. You will notice that in the title bar the value 3000 has been changed to max. This is what we need. It's optional but it will help speed up the installation.

4. I mounted the test folder I just made earlier as my C:\ drive in DOSBox. You can mount any folder you like. The command I used was this:

mount c c:\test

5. Then mount your image or your actual physical optical drive that has your game inserted. From the screenshot you posted I see that yours is D:\ so please use the following.

mount d d:\ -t cdrom

The command from above should be the same if you mounted the image inside Daemon Tools, except you need to put the virtual drive letter in the command. I used the following command for the CUE sheet:

imgmount d c:\test\image\sh_v1_0_324.cue -t cdrom

6. Switch to your D:\ drive you mounted in DOSBox and type INSTALL and follow the on-screen instructions.

7. Choose the installation size from the menu you would like, but I'm pretty sure the Maximum Install: Animations & Speech on HD is the best here. That's option D and it should take up 83 Megs according to the setup utility. The installer will analyse if the machine is compatible with the game and you should get a green message that everything is ok. Just continue with pressing the Enter key.

8. Next you will be asked where do you want to install the game. The default path is C:\SILENT and that's what we want. You can change it if but it's optional. Just press another Enter to start the installation. The setup will now uncompress the ARJ files from the disk to your hard drive you just mounted. Grab a cup of coffee and let it do it's thing.

9. After the install is done you will get a message that the program has been installed successfully. Just press Enter or choose OK. The README is optional, because I assume you already know the controls and you have the manual anyway for the game.

10. The Sound Configuration utility should pop up and just choose the Creative Labs Sound Blaster Pro or 100% compatible option. It should detect it automatically and exit the sound setup with the Done option.

11. If you have done everything correctly just type SH and hit enter. The game should launch automatically. Enjoy the game!

Remember, if you quit DOSBox you need to mount everything again if you don't use the [autoexec] section. Just remount them with the same commands and it should detect the disk and play the game. No need for -ioctl or messing with the label.

I made a little screen recording with all the steps mentioned above. You can watch it here:

Hope these help something. If you have any more questions feel free to ask and we try to do our best to give you an answer. Have a nice day!
