I googled a bit but couldn't find an answer...
Is it possible to have several hard drives in MS-DOS, but still force the CD drive to be d: ?

Kind of not necessary anymore!
I solved my using a CF reader at the back of the machine. If the CF card is removed, the main HDD is C and the CD drive is D.
When I load stuff onto the machine I use CF cards and then the CD drive moves to E. But a reboot without the CF card and it's all good again. Works for me 😀
This should clear it up: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/51978
There might be tools to exchange drive letters afterwards though.
