Hello,

It's my first time on this forum and my problem is quite simple.

I have an old "Nvidia GEForce4 MX 440" and it utilizes two sets of settings: 1)for the display, 2)for video output. I prefer the display settings with a lower brightness as I read quite a lot on the screen, my video settings have a higher brightness value.

The problem is that I can't make dosbox use the correct set of settings for the games it displays, the games appear much darker and are much less fun to play.

I tried to tweak the 'output' parameter in the dosbox.conf, I tried surface, overlay and even some value that was not suggested by the manual - but to no avail.

Do you know if it's possible for this to be improved in any way?

Well, tweaking settings in DOSBox shouldn't be expected to solve a problem that is being created outside of DOSBox.

I don't think GeForce4 drivers were updated past 2006 or so, but are you using the latest available version? There should be a more flexible way to manage brightness than "one setting for video, one for everything else" (not 100% sure for old models like this one, but I'm fairly certain that DOSBox won't be able to affect it either way).

You've answered my question. No, I don't think there is an update to this old graphics card I'm using that would offer better settings options ...

I'd have to change my display settings every time I decide to play ..

btw, why could not dosbox be 'told' to use the video settings of the graphics card?

There's no standard API for this kind of control, so it's up to the card's configuration software. With newer cards, the control panel allows you to create profiles with the settings you want and assign them to specific programs (or to keyboard shortcuts).
