Another Win 3.x issue on 0.74 (also tried the taewoong latest svn)

Before starting I installed Win32S (WIN32s 1.30.172, 2.41).

The game seems to install fine, however after install it says it requires quicktime for windows to be installed.

the quicktime installer immediatly errors out with:
Win32s - Error
QT32.exe
Unhandled Exception detected (Code: 0xC0000094 QT32.EXE:6C75)
Application will be terminated

So I installed Quicktime for Windows 2.1.2, which is the last version compatible with Win 3.x that i am aware of (but is probably not 32 bit like the one it is trying to use).

If I attempt to just run the game it comes back and claims it can not find msvfw32.dll.

So I installed Microsoft Video For Windows (Video for Windows 1.1, 1.39), but same error.

So basically, I don't know what to try next. I can't get the Quicktime 32 application to install which relies on Win32s. It may have something to do with Win32s's desire for share.exe, but I'm not positive.

While I know this begins to border on out of scope or low priority for the dosbox community, this is still the only place on the internet to discuss this sort of thing with others who have the proper knowledge to assist. Thanks.

SHARE.EXE still works when you boot DOSBox from a hard drive image, doesn't it? Does that fix the problem?

I can't mount the games image if I were to go that route.

So the game has to be run from a CD image? How about SHSUCDHD ? Or maybe the DOSBOX-X extensions will do the trick? (They're included in ykhwong's build, if I'm not mistaken.)

Try installing with SETUP16.EXE, thus avoiding 32-bit stuff; I think you'll find that less problematic. After the game is installed it will try to install QT, but cancel that and separately install QT 2.1.2.

I don't have a setup16.exe file. That feeds my suspicions that there is a Win 3.1/Win95 versions, and a Win95 only version.

Pictures of the media on Mobygames only show Win3.1 listed on the physical discs of European copies.

I have two different US copies (different art on discs), but their file listing is nearly the same - just some different date stamps in there. Seems one may be patched.

My copy says Windows 95 required.

If possible, backup that windows directory and do a fresh install of windows.
Disable EMS in the profile.
Install the required drivers for the graphics and sound for Win 3.x.
Then continue with 9 installation, and see if it can complete the process, without installing Win32s first. (See if the Quicktime can be installed first, before Win32s, and use the same quicktime which comes with the CD.)

(There are some ironic situations where the included quicktime does not work with the game it came with. I forgot the titles.)

(I'm not sure about the 9 game, and if it requires Win32s?)

Ok, so I tried several thing.

First I tried the fresh windows install, disabled EMS, installed video/sound drivers, and then installed the game. I tried this with both Win 3.1, Win 3.11, and WFW 3.11

In all cases, Nine installs, and it just flickers the screen briefly at the QT32 install. Attempts to run the game also flicker quickly. It is worth noting that the icon it creates for Nine in these examples is always a generic MS-DOS icon, as if it thinks it is running a DOS native program.

If I do the same setup, but install Win32s first, then I get the errors I originally posted above. Nine installs fine, and at the Qt32 install it complains about the Win32S error. The games icon in this case is actually a specific icon designed for the game, rather than a generic MS-DOS icon. I get the msvfw32.dll error if I try to run the game.

My copy does not make mention of Win 3.1 anywhere on the cd. I just know that the install runs and that there are the cd's scanned (linked above) that specifically *do* mention Windows 3.1

I don't know if I have a crippled later copy, where Win 3.1 support was stripped, or if my copy is compatible and it just doesn't like this particular style of dosbox/win 3.1 setup.

Well, I can only tell you with certainty that the English (UK) version works fine in DOSBox under Windows 3.11 with the game's 16-bit install and QT 2.1.2.

You can probably get many games intended for Windows 95 to limp along to varying degrees with Win32s, but they'll never truly work there.

My version of the 9: the Last Resort have setup16.exe and setup.exe.
Still the QT installer (qt16.exe) is generating a page fault.
So - don't use QT from the game cd, install QT separately.

Thanks Gamecollector and Ripsaw. I was able to track down a different copy that has the files you both mentioned. So there was definately 2 different pressings of the game (at least), and from the box art I have seen, it seems only UK versions had the Win 3.x executables.

I also had a problem with the quicktime on the disk and had to use a separate install for it.

Does anyone else hear music when they start the game, but not see anything? It feels like a logo movie ought to be playing. A postcard appears shortly there-after, and I played enough of the game to see some little demon looking guys dancing behind a gate, which seems to suggest movies are working in the game (assuming that was a movie). I was comparing it to myst, where basically anytime anything moves at all, it is a quicktime movie.

I guess this is one of the titles, then.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_for_Windows

the msvfw32.dll is contained in this package which is from 1992

Video for Windows was first introduced in November 1992. It was developed as a reaction to Apple Computer's QuickTime technology, which added digital video to the Macintosh platform. Costing around $200,[1] the product included editing and encoding programs for use with video input boards. A runtime version for viewing videos only was also made available as a free add-on to Windows 3.1 and Windows 3.11; it then became an integral component of Windows 95 and later.

perhaps this can be fixed by installing the very first version of windows media player

unfortunately the stuff i posted above didnt end up installing the msvfw32.dll file.....
there must be a way to get this file installed... because i have a demo of "samplitude" by Sekd which is an audio editing app..
and it throws this missing file error... but the documentation clearly says that the app is for windows 3.1

most would conclude that apps that throw this error require windows 95+ but
there must be an update/package that results in this file being installed on a windows 3.1/3.11 system

the mediaplayer install i linked above is corrupt
this one is good : http://www.conradshome.com/win31/files/mp52beta.exe

damn you MSVFW32.DLL!!!!!!!!!! 😀

I figured he was trying to find a "legal" source, such as where a Windows 3.1/3.11 system would have originally obtained this DLL.

Be careful with DLL file sites, I've seen viruses come down with downloads before. Not to mention sometimes they offer proprietary DLLs which would have only come from commercial software packages. Not forbidden to mention here, just... be careful. 😉
