That is precisely what Mr. Kieran has been attempting to use.

good, there is a program for the A/UX (dont quote me on that exactly) server install. it has a format utility that is NOT crippled to ignore non-apple drives. once formatted you can install normally.

It remains that one cannot conclude at this point that the system can be booted from this particular CD, or whether the system can boot from CDs at all.

The only way to be sure would be to boot from a floppy with CD-ROM drivers on it, and I'm not too sure how one would do that. Maybe there's a suitable floppy image floating around out there already?

The CD drive doesn't spin I guess I would get an error or at least the drive would make some noise.

This sentence is unclear. I think you are missing a word or two.

I believe System 7.6.1 is free. If not, System 7.5.x is. You could get it on Apple site. They changed it a lot but you might still be able to find it.

Yes, System 7.5.3 is free and so is the 7.5.5 update; they are the least freely-available versions. However, that does not seem to address the problem at hand.

I've never heard of a CD drive with a fully operational tray mechanism that does not spin at all. It suggests a serious mechanical defect.

Even if the drive was completely disconnected from the chain, if it is still receiving power, the disc should spin when the tray is retracted. At least, that's been my experience with every drive I've ever seen.

they will work, but you have to force apple's software to acknowledge their existence. usually its a simple hack.

Like I said, if your Mac has Ethernet, you can still probably get it to talk to Basilisk II or Sheepshaver on your PC, provided you can set up a suitable environment for the 32-bit network driver.

But yes, it would probably be easier to get a working Mac at this point. 🤣

Look for a non-apple branded unit. While caddy style cd drives are always more expensive, there are tray versions that can be bought for a song. That said, if you want to use a non-apple cd drive you will need to install a hacked cd driver. As far as ethernet aaui adapters go, I got mine for $5 if memory serves.
