OK so I have successfully built my 486Dx66 with period correct internals. All software I had as a preteen punk loaded and all running beautifully! I originally bought a 386dx40 back in 92. Then sold it in 96 and was computer-less until about 1998. So thats the target which seems a bit more challenging.

So I figured the 486 would cover software from 87(via turbo button) to 95. So my next build I want to target years 96 - 2002. Is that too long of a span? I guess I would want a period correct high-end 2000-01 machine?

I cant remember but Im sure I had an AMD 3D now cpu not sure what speed. So what would you guys recommend? I know I want the k62 socket 7 but what about processor speed and video card? Viper v770? I do remember owning that at one point.

List of games Im targeting.. Im sure it will help with components needed.

Incoming - 1998
Avp 2 - 2001
Recoil - 1999
Rogue Squadron 3d - 1998
Freespace II - 1999
Jedi Knight II Outcast - 2002
Janes WWII - 1998
Mech Commander - 1998

Not sure the Viper has enough punch for games in 2002 like Jedi Outcast and Avp 2. So what would you do? Ram, harddrive, CDROM speed? So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks Guys!

Since AVP2 and JK2 are on your list, the AMD K6-2 is a big fat NO! for those (even the 500mhz variants). You'd need at least an Athlon Thunderbird or later Pentium III for those two to play well.
The TNT2 should still function with those games however. Also a modern system should be able to handle those two fine, Lithtech and idTech3 didn't really use exotically obsolete capabilties one would build a retro system for.

I'd do a nice fast PIII on a 440BX chipset with a Geforce 440MX for video. Put an ISA sound card in there for late DOS games, and you're all set. This box would be a good target for a 3dfx setup too.

OS choice is debatable. Earlier games will do better on 98SE, later games better on 2k or XP. You may want to dual boot.

Once you have this box, all you need is a Tandy that does 4.77mhz, and you can play just about anything.

The link below contains details about the PC I put together for that sort of timeframe. I've played a lot of Jedi Knight II Outcast on it - the most recent game in your list - and it runs great.

I've since put an ISA sound card with DB into the ISA slot for any SVGA DOS games that are too much for my P166.

A Pentium III Windows 98 build to complete the gang.

Thanks all! Ok so no on the K62. Well I took it a step further. I had my original P4 2.8 single core PC in the garage. Its running XP and has my old favorite video card the GeForce 6600GT. Out of curiosity I literally dusted it off and pulled out my old CDROM binder with all my old games. Well I was surprised to find that 90% of the games I threw at it actually played very nice.

Rouge Squadron 3D _ tested works
Freespace 2 _ tested works Looks incredible!!
Shogo tested _ tested works

Rollcage _tested failed
This game reports an error immediately and will not open.

Still picking up other games like Recoil and Mech Commander

I realize that this P4 is not period correct machine for 1998-2002 games but for the most part they seem to work and run very smooth with all graphics maxed. I bought it new in early 2003 and lasted me up to 2006.

Now the question is should I switch to win98se? Would their be any benefits? Will I compromise the stability of the newer games like Jedi Knight 2 or even newer like SW Battlefront? Never thought of dual boot as recommended by Hatta.

I know this comes down to the games I want to play. I guess that gap of inactivity for me between the years 1996-98 may have spared me from getting a whole other PC. If I cant find games of that era that I absolutely NEED to play then this rig just might make me happy.

Ill update games that did or didn't work.

badmofo, beautiful machines by the way. Once I move into a larger space I think I may go ahead and build the K62 anyway. 😜

Thanks again!
Nick

Win98SE will FLY on a Pentium 4 rig, but keep in mind that you may run into problems if you have more than 512MB of ram.
