Hi folks,

today i found on the net the dosbox and how to run Fragile Allegiance with it on Win Xp.
It works great because after years i can finally start FA....and even with sound! Splendid!
But:
When I hit the "New Game" button the game says "Please insert the Fragile Allegiance CD" -___-

Yes, the CD is in the drive, i checked it. Then i tried it with an ISO Image...nope. Didn't work. Then i found a post somewhere where it says that you have to copy some files from the CD to the HD. I tried it but it didn't worked as well. Then i tried to edit the CONFIG.ini of FA. I edited the sourcepath:X to D: which is my CD drive. And guess...it didn't worked. At this point i tried everything as far as i know. But it seems that i'm the only one with this problem. Because at every site which is dealing with FA on dosbox people say "works great" or "no prob". And i wanna play FA so badly... 🙁

Please help me, folks!

Greetings

You mean those lines you have to add in the config.conf?

It's:
mount c E:\FRAGILE
mount d E:\FRAGILE\fragile -t cdrom
c:
cd fragile
fragile

Try
mount c C:\FRAGILE
mount d E:\ -t cdrom
Assuming E:\ is your CD drive.

Ehm...no.
My CD Drive is actually F:

I have three partitions on my HD.
C:
D:
E:
Then i got the CD/DVD drive F:
and then G: to O: are virtual drives, usb hubs and card readers etc.

Edit:
Well i tried to start the game via the WIN95RUN.exe file. This works but then the sound and game is laggy and the game crashes after a few minutes. So i suppose the problem is somwhere within the dosbox thing, and i'm pretty sure it's something easy i just overlooked.

There was no way to discern that from your other posts. Could you go into more detail about the steps you've taken and what happens?

Alright. Here are the steps i've done.

I installed the game from the original disc to E:\FRAGILE
Then i downloaded the dosbox, and installed it to E:\FRAGILE
Then i opened the dosbox and typed in:
config -writeconf dosbox.conf

Then i opened the dosbox.conf and added at the bottom:

mount c E:\FRAGILE
mount d E:\FRAGILE -t cdrom
c:
cd fragile
fragile

then i double click on the dosbox.exe

Then FA starts, everything's great until i click on "New Game" or "Load Game".
Then it says "Please insert the FA Disc"

Well that's all the stuff i did so far.

Edit:
I followed this guide:
http://www.glennsguides.com/2009/01/fragile-a … -game-free.html

Except that i didn't downloaded the game, i installed it from my cd because the version from the net is in english, but i want it in german....or is there a difference between the original version from the CD and the downloadable version?

Edit2:
Problem solved!
I changed the lines in the dosxbox.conf to

mount d E:\
mount f F:\ -t cdrom

then i start dosbox, then i type in D:\
then cd D:\Fragile
then fragile
and it runs perfectly 😀
Yeeha...after years i can finally play Fragile Allegiance again!

You said before that the disc is in F:\. You didn't actually mount it. You just mounted the game's folder as 2 different letters.

Okay, I see you figured that out yourself. Still, you should mount the location you want to the game first, then install it.

Just wanted to say, SKARDAVNELNATE, that I came across this after dying to play this game for years. Your first fix here fixed mine perfectly and what I was doing wrong. The little difference of mounting using c:\fragile\ and c:\ is huge. Thanks! I can finally play my first 4x game ever! YES!

Mounting C:\ is generally not a good idea. What I suggested above was to mount a subfolder.
For me I would use MOUNT C C:\DOS\GAMES
Then after running the installer the game would be in C:\DOS\GAMES\FRAGILE
But within DOSbox that path would look like C:\FRAGILE

Hm what I mean is if I use c:\fragile\ I get a no cd error but if I use C:\ -t cdrom I don't. Out of curiosity, why is mounting C not recommended?

Mounting C:\ gives DOSbox access to your system files. This is potentially dangerous as programs might have the ability to delete something important or if were to try installing Windows 3.1 within DOSBox you would overwrite the Windows folder of your system. This is why a subfolder is always recommended.

If you're getting an error please start a new topic and explain what is happening so someone can advise.

Ahh, okay, I wondered that because I had seen that frequently. And I am having an error, do you want me to REALLY start a new thread or would you maybe wanna take a quick stab at it.

I'll start one anyways, but for the sake of you knowing, I installed the game. I swapped files in folders from the cd to the file folder in C:\ When I open dos box I type "mount c c:\fragile" and then i follow with mount d c:\ -t cdrom" but you said not to mount like that, so I used the folder I have the files from the cd in [if you are still with me here] and it is called turkey. I mount like "mount d c:\turkey -t cdrom. Right? Well A) no, still no cd and B) the original way doesn't work either. When I start a game and click to construct it terminates and says I am missing files. Grrrrr.

I'm surprised people keep finding this difficult to understand.

Start DOSBox
Mount a subfoldfer as C
Mount the CD-ROM as D

That would mount your entire C:\ drive as the CD-ROM. Why not mount the CD-ROM as the CD-ROM?

I have to admit that is an improvement from what you were previously doing.

See above where you used "mount c c:\fragile", the game expects to be within the folder FRAGILE. I don't think this is the mounting you used when the game was installed. I also don't think that you installed it within DOSBox.
Don't move files around the way you described.

Honestly man, Idk why I can't do it either. So here are my steps and sorry for being such a pain in the ass. I took the files from the Cd and put them into a folder called "Fragiler" and I created a subfolder in C:\ called "Turkey"

I mount like you told me to (I think):
Mount c c:\turkey
mount d c:\fragiler -t cdrom
And then I installed by going to C:\ and entering install.

If I understand correctly to then play I mount as follows:
Mount c C:\turkey\fragile
Mount d C:\fragiler -t cdrom
C:\
Fragile
and then the game starts.

When I start a new game and go to construct something it crashes with ,"Error: Whilst Opening "_Ma\_Ma" : No such file or directory." What am I missing! Thanks for your help, seriously. This is a gem from my childhood that I just can't seem to get to work!

I've been digging since I don't want to particularly annoy you, and I came across this : Fragile Allegiance _MA\_MA . Its my problem, except I don't know much about what they are talking about. I looked in the install.ini file and poked around. I am capable of following step by step instruction. I am lost with this scripting type stuff :[

This I don't get. What do you think the advantage is in copying the files to a folder?

Do you mean D:\install? C:\, which is turkey, should be empty at this point.

SonOfCirca wrote:

No, you would use the same mountings as when you installed. The installer made the directory FRAGILE, the game will look for the files in that directory. Doing this instead, the files will appear at the root of C:\ and the game won't know to look for them there.

I find that thread a bit confusing myself. I think it says there is an _MA folder on the CD and there is an _MA file within that folder. When installing it's suppose to copy the _MA file from the _MA folder. But because this file has no extension and the way DOSBox 0.74 handles something in the copy command the _MA file is being skipped as well as some others.

The suggested fix is to copy the skipped files ("D:\_MA\_MA", "D:\_SCITEK\_SCITEK", "D:\_ZOOM\_ZOOM") from the CD and paste them into their folders where you installed the game.
