Can anyone recommend a US-based company that currently insures computer parts? I'm finding that most companies insure whole systems (Dell, HP, etc) computers and laptops, but not individual computer components.

Basically, if your laptop/computer is damaged or stolen, they try to establish the value of the item and find a suitable replacement. With these vintage computer parts, you can't just assign a value and find a suitable replacement out there as these are more of a collectable at this point.

Has anyone ran across this???

I think you're more likely to get what you want from a company that specifically insures collectibles.

How much are the systems worth? The insurance premiums will likely exceed the replacement costs no matter how rare unless its something like an Apple I or Altair (truly rare and irreplaceable). In the grand scheme of things, vintage computer systems and parts generally aren't worth all that much, particularly if they were a mass produced item. The other problem is in order to get an assigned value policy, an insurer is likely to want the items appraised. Things like ebay sold auctions generally aren't enough.

Yeah, I guess that's my question. If I buy a part off ebay, who determines the parts actual value? Some insurance company isn't going to be able to tell me how much a Creative CT1350B ISA sound card is worth.

So what determines that? Just wondering if there is anyone out there that doesn't require an appraisal, but just uses a flat dollar value based on how much coverage YOU think you need - perhaps based on how much a person spent on the items.

computers don't get better with age. they fail with age.

I'm interested to know how you go with that Artex

Have you found any insurance companies that will cover your ebay items?

How does the whole collectable thing work with insurance companies? They just pay you out if something happens ?
