Many probably know the rather nice MT-32 game list on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_MT-32-c … _computer_games

It even specifies which games use CM-32L sounds. However it doesn't say which of those games reprogram the MT-32 to use custom instruments and which don't. Since many popular GM devices offer a MT-32 emulation mode this could be of interest for those that own such synths, but don't have a MT-32.

Based on my own testing:

Monkey Island
Loom

Not easy to get a definitive answer on this short of capturing MIDI from each game and inspecting it.

Maybe we could compile a list ourselves. I tested Waxworks and Elvira II: The Jaws of Cerberus with Mega-Em (GUS emulation of the MT32) and they sounded fantastic.

Is Overkill actually GM (like stated on its Wikipedia article) or is it MT-32 only? I find this game to sound subjectively better on my SC-88 when it's in CM-64 mode. Of course still not really accurate to a real MT-32 though. Did a quick recording in that mode.

Edit: New recording that allows for better comparison: https://mega.co.nz/#!NUIAwaZD!PLa7N1BbLuXra-- … oF5H44TUeYOM6yk

I recall Overkill (the shoot'em'up right?) sounding better in my CM-32L , will check it later back home and report back

edit: I confirm , it sounds better and more "correctly" on my CM-32L. The SC-55 mt-32 mode is ok-ish and the MU-80 is on the crappy side compared to the others...

edit2: am I correct to assume that the MU80's "C/M mode (Computer Music as it says on the manual)" is some sorts of mt-32 mode?

By more correctly, do you mean it sounds similar to my recording, just with real LA synthesis, or does it have some completely different instruments etc.? With other MT-32 games on the SC-55 I've recieved "No INSTRUMENT" messages, but not on this one. I'm not really sure if that alone is enough to say that a game doesn't reprogram the MT-32 in a way the SC-55 isn't compatible with though...

About the C/M mode thing, yeah that must be a thinly veiled CM32L compatibility mode. Actually I believe the DB50XG/DB60XG has something similar too, it's not even mentioned in the manual though IIRC. There is some special Sysex to access that mode.

Ok thx... yeah sounds quite a bit better 😀 the game makes very nice use of the MT-32/CM-32L. You're making me want to get a real LA synth now 🤣

^ I can't believe you don't have at least a MT-32... you need one! 🤣

ps. I see my recording has low volume... I don't understand why, I recorded/encoded with audacity and it was louder when recording... the output is directly from the cm-32l to the line-in of my auzentech x-fi forte

It is the same thing for me with Audacity. It might be because of some volume setting in the program, but I usually don't mess with that. I always tweak the line in volume in the Windows mixer and on the synth itself until it's loud enough, but not clipped. You can judge this by the graph.

And yeah I definitely need to get a MT-32 sometime, even though most games for it aren't exactly my territory 😀
