I saw the episode, and what was the first thing that went through my mind ? Well it was a giant WTF. There is no way I would pay 3 bucks for a game that is that horrible. I have gotten better games for free. Than I would pay 3 bucks for. I am very happy that the oldest games I have played, were on the C64, and yeah I know there are loads of shite games on the C64. But this game ? I would not touch with a fire-poker . Unless it was to put it further in , into the fire. But other than that, good episode 😀.

Because I like, that he makes his ADG episodes , fillers and what not. But some times I think the games he reviews, suck. 😀
Second of all, it sounded quite like a sale pitch , the review he did . Of such a ugly and hideous game. Hidden inside the words "retro" and so forth.

I'm sure everyone's noticed by now that's my standard mode of speaking: Whenever I like something, it sounds like I'm trying to sell it. ^_^;

I wouldn't be surprised if some internet reviewers avoided talking about things they like because the same thing happens to them. :P

In my defence, when I said free games. I did mean free games. I am lucky having friends, who has given me some free games over the years 😀

Must be nice, the only thing I get from mine is a hard time... 🤣

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

But why do you think this game sucks? All you really said is "it's bad" in a number of different ways...

In reference to the statement that the filler came off as a paid advertisement (an assertion that I disagree with): I wish Kris were famous enough for developers to want to bribe him to review their games. I enjoy ADG 😀

Okay, if it had been The Oregon Trail, he had been reviewing. I would be more like "well this game is an old game, and it is not down to graphics". If it had been The Organ Trail, it would have been down to the humour. And the homage to the before mentioned game. But this game feels like a cheap cash in, with poor graphics to boot and some words like "Atari 2600 and retro". And I feel it could just as well have been done in flash and made for free. That is why I think it seriously suck. If Gemini000 had made the game. I would be shocked, not because he had not put HOURS of time into programming the game and all that. But because I had expected more from him. But back to the game, that I think sucks. I have nothing against flash games at all. Heck I some times play a round of two of Gemcraft Labyrinth, and that is thanks Gemini000 for showing the game on ADG. And sure if I paid around 3 bucks for that game. I would not feel cheated out of my money for it. But if I paid 3 bucks for this game on this episode. I would feel very much cheated out of my money.

Did I not mention during the video that there was a massive selection of wagons and weapons and that I was only "scratching the surface" of what the game had to offer?

I think in total, I showed about 10% of the game's content in the video. There's seriously a TON of content and it takes quite a number of playthroughs to experience it all.

Also, the game plays at 60 FPS, so it's much smoother to play in person than a review could ever hope to demonstrate.

But yeah, I can understand that it might feel like a cheap cash in but it has the gameplay, content, and humour to back up its $3 price-tag. I've seen far worse games for over the $20 mark. :P

The Catacomb 3-D games were all given to me for free by the present rights holder, Flat Rock Software. :)

...that's about it though (so far) for freebies straight from developers/publishers/rights-owners for sake of reviewing. Which is fine; I didn't start ADG just to get free stuff. :B

Though some developers have been helpful in terms of making these reviews work with games I already paid for. The review of Excelsior Phase I was done with an older copy that didn't have animations, but that copy requires a different registration key than the newer ones, so 11th Dimension Entertainment was willing to send me a registration key for the older version. :)

Gemini000: I think the graphics are horrible. Of the game, but I have nothing against shooters, in fact my love for 2D shooters has been rekindled. Thanks to the maker of RetroCore (another game show). So put it plainly. I do not like this game without any kind of bad words in my sentence 😀 so could we get on it with it ? 😀 Unless SquallStrife: Wants to debate further in a very courteous manner 😀

Well, you have to admit there's a certain irony of complaining about retro graphics on a forum called "Very Old Games On Modern Systems". ;D

Yeah, I complained about the presentation of MURI in a different thread, but seriously, try playing the original Duke Nukem, then go play MURI, then go play Duke Nukem again, and the difference in the graphical quality really stands out. I actually think Super Amazing Wagon Adventure looks BETTER than MURI. :o

That's just me though. Gameplay is always more important than graphics any day of the week! ;)

WTF, using Game Maker to emulate the style of Apogee EGA platformers is now trendy? That makes me feel old. Actually, those games came out around 20 years ago; I *am* old! 🙁

I just MURI out, oh humanity. I would rather play Duke Nukum and Keen. Than MURI. Damn, somebody should seriously make some new, but real old school dos games. Heck they could make them free, and perhaps even open source. I have enjoyed quite a lot of those 20 years old games. Yeah I am old too. But at the same time I would not say MURI is a bad game. I just feel slapping the word "retro" is in many ways a sales pitch for games. You used to buy on a shareware CD, where they were either demos, alpha and beta versions. Some times freeware, and in rare cases full games too. And those collections would cost you around a fiver , in Danish (if you were lucky) currency. Which is around a dollar (give or take depending on the currency rates of course). And if you were a bit less lucky, it would cost you 3 dollars, or around 15 Danish Kroner. So go figure, why I growled in my first post about the Super Amazing Wanking Adventure.
Cause that game is to me complete and almost utter wank. Okay, if I am too British (Scouse to be more exact). Then okay , I am cool with that. So enough bollocks from me 😀

Sorry to high jack but, what is the difference between Worms United on the GOG and just plain ol' Worms on steam? I figure since you did an ep on worms united that this MAY be a good place to ask.

MURI seems exploitative on fauxstalgic target audience (reminiscing the 90's yet not remembering 9/11) than anything else. I was glad we moved on from choppy tiled platformers like Nukum and Captain Comic so it doesn't appeal to me in the slightest.

You're not hijacking the thread. The thread's about the show and the games I've covered on it! ;D

As for Worms on Steam, it's actually Worms United, just with no mention of the expansion or such, thus it's the same game as what you would get from GOG. That said, after reading through forum posts it seems as though the GOG version is more likely to work properly. Not sure why that is but it's probably related to DOSBox version/configuration differences between the two releases.

GOG generally goes the extra mile to make sure their stuff actually works well on the widest range of current systems, while corresponding Steam stuff is often just a lazy one-off (or a shameless copy of the GOG release by the rights holder at best, profiting off of GOG's work by lazily copying it onto Steam).

thanks. i kind of prefer steam since i have so many machines, it's easier to manage. since it's a dosbox game i'll probably just copy the files over to my 98 machine and just launch the original exe that is usually included. seeing as all/most dosbox games on steam are DRM free anyways.

I have 400GB HDD in my Linux box where I put all my ISOs, Steam backups, GOG downloads, etc. My Windows boxes mount is as drive I: (I for ISOs). For me this makes it as convenient to get to as Steam games.

The only advantage of Steam for me is that it automatically updates. GOG's web site (and optional downloader client) is decent about showing me when something has updated, though.
