I chose Thermaltake Matrix case for this build: http://thermaltake.co.nz/product/Chassis/midt … rix/vd2000.html

Inside I mounted an ASUS P5A-B baby-AT motherboard with 3x 128MB RAM, AMD-K6-2/300AFR and GeForce 2 MX 400.

I have yet to settle on a hard drive and sound card...

Now the first problem is the power supply. It's a cheap ATX Tecnoware 420W. The motherboard reports an error during post: -5V = 0.1V

How will this affect the system? Can I ignore the warning?

I believe it's the norm for new ATX power supplies not to supply -5V.

As long as you don't have expansion cards that need -5V (e.g. LAPC-I) it won't cause a problem.

Added some pics!

I removed all the header cables I didn't need (both COM ports and LPT port) to tidy up the system.

Have yet to install a floppy and a CD-ROM. HDD is a 1.2GB Fujitsu.

Sound card is temporarily a Sound Blaster Live!

The downside of this system is that one ISA and one PCI share the slot so I can't use both at the same time.

You can use both "shared" slots if one of the cards doesn't have any connections on its backplate. People used to do it with PowerVR PCX2 cards all the time. The only ISA device I used to run on my P5A-B was a sound card. Everything else was PCI.

Ah didn't know that! You're probably right about only needed one ISA slot tho...

Ended up having to reinstall Windows so I installed 98 Second Edition. Temporarily removed the sound card, everything else works fine.

The only problem is that Opera 10.10 crashes a lot... I mean a lot!

I know that beige floppy is an eye-sore but I don't have a black one...

I was almost going to ask where the Windows keys were, but then I realized that it's actually an older model, and not one of the newer Model M clones. 🤣

That's an awesome looking keyboard!
Looks like it was designed for C64 veterans who couldn't get used to a PC keyboard 🤣

I don't know why,but I see some dust on the front of the case.Could be my imagination, though.

I think I'll try installing a slim version of the 3.5" 40GB Maxtor drive. I'm hoping for decreased loading times. Waiting two and a half minutes just for Windows 98 to load is way too slow for me especially, if you reboot the computer often.

Well I just upgraded my system with a 40GB Maxtor drive. Ah the silence! Had to update BIOS to make it work.

Won a K6-2+ 550 on eBay the other night for 7.50€ incl. shipping. Sweet, eh? Let's hope it works fine in this mobo.

Wow! The difference in boot speed is just incredible! It took 2 minutes to get in Windows on the old 850MB Conner. Now it only takes 30 seconds 😀

The 550Mhz should work fine. I think thats what the P5A-B I have sitting on the shelf got in it. 4 minutes to boot a fresh install of Windows 98 seems excessive even by contemporary standards. That drive was SLOW.
