Many early games used MT-32 (MIDI) for high quality music. However, some of these games have add-on drivers to enable other MIDI music options, often of high quality sound. This is particularly relevant to casual users of dosbox 0.74.
Civilization has an add-on to enable General MIDI (GM) and SB16 drivers (attached file). GM rivals the unpatched MT-32 option while the SB16 produces much better output than the unpatched Soundblaster option. The driver also appears here: http://apolyton.net/local_links/links/c-patches-422/5299.
Some early Sierra games have patches to enable a General MIDI option: http://sierrahelp.com/Files/Patches/Misc/GENMIDI.ZIP. Included are: EcoQuest 1, Hoyle 3, Leisure Suit Larry 1 VGA, Leisure Suit Larry 5, Robin Hood: Conquest of the Longbow, Space Quest 1 VGA, Space Quest 4, and Mixed Up Fairy Tales.
And here is a 3rd party solution to "map MT-32 instruments to their GM equivalents" in some of the Sierra games: http://sierrahelp.com/Files/SoundUtilities/Ra … visGMDriver.zip.
For the Ultima series, there are some 3rd party patches to enable a GM option: http://reconstruction.voyd.net/index.php?even … eyword=fanpatch.
