At any given moment I have a PC which I consider my "Main" rig. It's where all the latest games and stuff go, where I surf the web, do business and so forth. It's the most powerful computer in the stable, though for a long time, before the retro bug hit, it was also the *only* computer [never owned a laptop or console].

Curious about the specific components to "take their turn at bat", I tabulated the central organs, in order of appearance by basic category: CPU, GPU, Audio and Motherboard.

I was surprised that with all the PC fussing over these last 18 years this list is as spare as it is. Eight CPU/AUDIO/MOBO appearances in 18 years = 2-1/4 years average life span. However one rig alone [AMD 64 4000+] accounted for at least 7 years on it's own, so averages are deceiving.

EDIT: Basically what I'm hoping we can do here is list by component - a change of pace to see the evolution of a category rather than the makeup of the actual rigs. I guess this is meant to be a component history, rather than a rig history. Also, NO NEED to list every last component; only those that saw real use in your everyday PC. So don't worry about all the backups, experiments, retro rigs etc...

Haha I'm sure! But like I said I was surprised how brief it turned out. I'm not counting retro boxes, side experiments or brief flings or course - *that* would get complicated...

Here's my list of basic components used for my Mothership PCs in a 20-year span (1994-2014):

CPU

Pentium 100 (dead)
Pentium 166MMX
Pentium 233MMX
Pentium 3 700 (sold long ago)
AMD Athlon 1.4 (dead)
AMD Athlon XP 2000+ Tbred (dead)
Pentium 4 2.4 Northwood
Core i5 3350p

GPU

Trident TGUI 9440 2MB (dead)
Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 (S3 Virge 325) 4MB
ATI Xpert 98 (Rage Pro) 8MB PCI
Matrox Millennium II 4MB PCI
Creative Labs Graphics Blaster RIVA TNT 16MB AGP (sold long ago)
Visiontek GeForce 2 GTS 32MB AGP (dead)
Leadtek GeForce 3 Ti 200 64MB AGP (dead)
ATI Radeon 7000 64MB AGP
Sparkle GeForce FX5500 256MB AGP
PNY Verto GeForce 6600 256MB AGP
EVGA GeForce GT 640 2GB PCIe

AUDIO

Aztec Sound Forte/Galaxy? (can't quite remember - dead)
Gravis Ultrasound ACE
Sound Blaster 16 MCD CT1750
Sound Blaster AWE64 Value CT4380 (sold long ago)
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
Phillips Seismic Edge PSC704
SBLive! Value CT4870 (dead - got another one much later)
Dynex DX-SC51
On-board Realtek ALC898
Asus Xonar DG PCI

MOBO

Unknown SIS Socket 5 (dead)
Jetway J-656VXC (dead)
Shuttle HOT-569 (dead)
Unknown Gigabyte 440BX Slot 1 (sold long ago)
Abit KT7A (dead)
Soyo P4I-845PE
MSI Z77-G43

During this time period I never had a laptop or brand-name PC (all were home builds); I also never had a console. The Athlon XP/Abit KT7A build lasted the longest (about 10 years) before it fried itself to death. The Pentium 3/Slot 1 build was the shortest - about 5-6 months before I sold it.

Ooohh, the pain......

Mine might as well be the shortest. Since 2003 my main PC had these parts:

CPU
Celeron 1700Mhz (2003-2006)
Core 2 Duo E6300 (2006-2013)
Core Quad Q6700 (2013-...)

GPU
Radeon 8500 (2003-2005)
Radeon 9600XT (2005)
Radeon x1800GTO (2006-2011)
HD 5670 (2011-...)

Motherboard
GA-8PE800 (2003-2006)
ASUS P5B (2006-2014)

Monitor
15" LCD NEC Multisync with integrated speakers (2003-2006)
17" Samsung 740N(2006-...)

All the other stuff was either integrated or not worth mentioning 😀 I would be still running Core 2 Duo, I'm completely satisfied with it's performance, yet I have found Xeon 3230 (rebranded CoreQuad Q6700) for $60 shipped and went for it. Core 2 Duo is now in my kitchen PC made exclusively for watching movies.

I like LGA775 and all the Conroe descendants very much and I look forward to staying on it for next 10 years 😁

This is easy for me because I can safely say my pentium 4 s478 3.2ghz on a 8knxp gigabyte board served me well from 2003 all the way until 2009 and then my Asus p4p800 took over just until last year where I finally upgraded to a core 2 duo e8500 with an Asus maximus formula x38 mb with sli ati radeon 6870 which is my main rig today. I was using some older socket 778 boards while i had my s478 to test out newer software and games but my s478 systems ran so rock solid for so long I really didn't feel the need to upgrade. Now I do love having my hd6870 s ...I know there are way faster options out there but for what I need I'm happy with my current setup...I'm not too into newer games and I still use and prefer win xp. I do have another core 2 duo that I plan to act as my win 7 system which again I know is no that fast but will be good enough for me. I7 systems are still too pricey for me for what you get...especially knowing that I want nothing to do with windows 8.

Between 7.2009 and 2.2012, I was using a Toshiba Satellite Pro A200-1NB as a desktop replacement. Served me well and is still being used on regular basis by my mother.

Sorry, if I don't list the rest.. too much to write and memory is hazy in parts 😉 I always liked to tinker with parts and I regularly upgraded my systems with better CPU, more RAM and a better graphics card.

My current rig is still going strong after 2 years and the only thing I might end up replacing soon is the Radeon 6850.

It's interesting examining everyone's 'front line' components without reference to the actual build - a snapshot of the evolution of a component. It's also amusing that we all seem to have an "unknown" 486 based part early on..

good question , I can't remember every PC component in every machine I ever owned, but these are some of them over the years, I will only list computers I actually owned, as opposed to the 486 machine I used in the early 90s , but belonged to my Dad.

First PC (1997-2001)

this PC was built for me by my Dad as a birthday present

an ASUS Socket 7 motherboard
Pentium 166
32MB RAM , later upgraded to 64MB
8GB Hard Drive
Sound Blaster 16 of some kind.
can't remember which graphics card, but I didn't have any 3D acceleration on it.
Windows 95, later upgraded to Win98SE.

Im a bit confused about the CPU , I have a faint memory of being told there was a Pentium Pro in this machine, which could have been the case since my dad who built it , worked with servers as a job, so he may well have been able to get a Pro cheaper, however that PC struggled to run Red Alert 2 , so Im not so sure.

After that I used a P4 machine which wasn't mine for about a year , before that machine got hit with a power surge, and had to be replaced, pretty crappy PC tbh , quite slow, and had WinME on it

2nd PC (2002-early 2008)

ASUS Socket A motherboard (again , can't remember which one)
Athlon XP 1800 , later upgraded to a 2100
512MB , later upgraded to 2GB
a few GPUs , some of which I can't remember , one was a Geforce FX series card I believe, which eventually failed, another was an X1650
WindowsXP Pro

I regret selling that computer now, would have made an excellent WinXP machine.

3rd PC (2008-2011)

can't remember the Motherboard
Core2Duo E4500 2.20Ghz
3GB RAM later upgraded to 4GB
can't remember what it originally came with , but I quickly got an ATI 4870.
WinXP Pro later upgraded to Windows 7 Professional

4th PC (2011-2013)

M4N68T-M V2 ASUS AM3 motherboard
Phenom II X6 1055T 6 core 2.8 CPU
AMD 6870 GPU (specifically the ASUS DirectCU version)
4GB DDR3
1TB hard drive
Windows 7 Pro

Current PC

Asus P8Z77-V LX2 Motherboard
Intel Core I5 3570K
still using the 6870 , which I want to upgrade sometime
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS which I managed to find cheap , works a whole lot better than the onboard audio.
8GB DDR3 from Patriot (Intel Extreme Masters)
same 1TB hard drive

I was actually pretty amazed at what a difference that Core I5 made to the games I was playing, it let the 6870 go to 100%, which saw Max Payne 3 running at 90+ FPS on full detail in most situations , twice what that Phenom II managed.

and yes I like ASUS products (I think I got that from my dad who was also a fan of their products)

I have different kind of processors here. But the most i have stored in factory trays. Now i have got six of them.

Maybe i will make some pictures when i have be in a good mood, and have some time to do so.

Your list need only include parts that saw real service in your main "Mothership" rig - your day to day workhorse - not necessarily every part that got tested or used in a backup/experimental/retro build. Segregating by part makes it different and interesting too. I'm looking for a way to cut through the mountains of gear 🤣
