First i just want to say that VDMSound is a great utility. It lets me hear all the sound effects in Dark Forces under Win2k and for that i'm grateful.

But, as far as the music goes, i could use some help. The playback is not broken (i CAN hear all of the music), but the songs are slowed down. As far as i can tell, the effect is like every MIDI note is being held out for too long. The playback speed also fluctuates a little bit but it's always too slow. What i'd like to know is if there's any way to make it faster, or if my system is just too outdated to handle it.

I am not using a DOS emulator, because this game runs fine under Win2k (without sound). For this i am running VDMSound version 2.1.0. I'm using all the default settings in the VDMSound properties dialog for the executable, except for the Adlib and SoundBlaster devices, which i've explicitly set to DirectSound on my SBLive. I've also set the MIDI device to "SBLive Synth A" because while i was messing around it seemed to work and sound the best. Other than that, it's all the defaults like i said.

Dark Forces has a separate setup utility for sound, called IMUSE.EXE. I ran this first, also through VDMSound, with all of the same settings i'm using for the game itself. While i was in IMUSE i configured it to use Adlib for music, and there were no other additional parameters available. There were a few other devices available in addition to Adlib (such as General MIDI), and i tried them all, but the problem persists.

I am beginning to think that my system is just too slow, so here are my specs and tell me what you think:

* Abit BX6 Rev.2 440BX (latest bios)
* Pentium 3, 500 MHz
* 448 mb pc100 ram
* Nvidia GeForce2 MX/MX 400, 64 mb (latest drivers)
* SB Live! value (latest drivers)
* Windows 2000 sp4 (all critical updates)
* DirectX 9.0b

Little help?

Speedset may help - if the game isn't protected mode, that is.
Cheers,

in vdmsounds launchpad there is a slider:
move it a little bit to left and check whether the game speeded up, if not move it a little bit more.....

(vladr: it is a dos4gw game, you have been already discussing this game and simmilar problem not that long ago 😉 )

Whooo! Thanks robertmo, that did the trick. I actually had to slide it all the way over to the left, but yeah it sounds real nice now. Thanks a ton.
