Hi,

just a little question, I'm trying to build my firts SLI PC, I have a GYGABYTE GA-5AX motherboard with a 400 MHz AMD K6 processor that I will use with two Voodoo 2 and a Matrox G200.
I'm trying to find a case, an old beige one, to use in this PC but all I can find are scratched, bented, poor condition ones... So, is it possible to buy a new case, like this one:

and use it with and old motherboard like the gygabyte one? Will the motherboard fit?

Thanks

Yeah, it should work fine - the GA-5AX is an ATX form factor board, so it'll work in any ATX form factor case.

The only thing I'd potentially wonder about is if you have an equally old PSU, you may need extensions for some of the wires to reach the board due to the bottom-mount, but that isn't hard to do. Given that the GA-5AX can use a normal ATX PSU, I'd probably just buy something new and not have to worry about getting a PSU from the cap plague or capacity; newer PSUs will also be more efficient.

ok, thanks, I do have an old QTEC PSU that I've been using with other builds.
And I can buy this case:

instead of the other one, It's cheaper, and the PSU is mounted on the top corner, like they used to be 😀

Should also work just fine. Thought of one thing since posting: don't expect to be able to connect all of the front-panel doodads that some newer cases have (like eSATA, FireWire, USB3.0, etc). That won't affect anything for normal use of the system though. 😀

I tried to find one without the ports, since I already knew that I will not use them, but it's not easy. 😀

Yeah most cases these days have them installed - they aren't thinking that someone is going to buy their case and put a K6 in it. 🤣

On some cases (and it's sometimes hard to tell without having the case physically in front of you) you can actually remove the ports/wires/etc entirely (they just unscrew or unclip from the inside of the case) and then re-use the holes for something else, or cover them up, or do whatever else that you'd like (basically limited only by budget/time/creativity etc).

Alternately you may be able to re-purpose some of the ports, for example front audio ports you could clip the AC'97/HDA header off, figure out which leads to go to which contact on the jacks, and re-wire them to TRS jacks to plug into your soundcard's outputs.
