msconfig and W95a

I was reading old tech forums and there seems to have been an msconfig, apparently modded, that worked with W95a. Anyone ever come across one of these?

Some people said you could just copy msconfig over from W98 but this appears only to work with W95c.

I was able to track down a trio of similar utilities; StartUp, StartUpCP, and StartUpMan that purportedly worked with 95a, but none work with my pre-C versions of Win95.

Are there any known msconfig-like utilities that do run under 'a' or 'b'?

Not sure about 95A. I do know about 95B-C having msconfig in this http://www.mdgx.com/spx/OSR2SP1.EXE. Maybe it'll install on 95A (don't need to install service pack stuff; it's optional and separate.)? Upgraded from 98SE to 95C, and installed msconfig utilities, and FIX95CPU.ZIP (availalbe @ mdgx.com) on my AM3+ piledriver setup.

Actually no version of Windows 95 shipped with MSConfig (nor did Windows 2000, for that matter). It was possible to use the version from 98/Me in Windows 95 and many people did that. I presume that's what's rolled into that unofficial service pack (And...Indeed it is: HKLM,%UpdateKey%\%SPKey%\%LocaleID%%UpdID%,%11%\msconfig.exe,,"4.10.0.2223")

I'd be very wary of installing OSR2 fixes on 95A. Some low-level changes did occur - it's not the same OS. You should, however, be able to extract the MSCONFIG.EXE from that archive and use it without any issues.

If you don't want to, this is a link to the same file in the archive.

Thanks, but I think I already tried that version of msconfig - no dice... I'm not upgrading this particular build to OSR2 either, as I want to keep a vanilla '95a' version as part of the running collection.

You can always just edit the appropriate registry keys manually. That's mostly all that msconfig does anyway.

Have you installed the Common Controls update? If it is missing, it might explain why those other programs don't run.

http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm also has numerous other startup managers.

So it will sit in a corner somewhere while you use a different machine that works better. 🤣

Never! haha... It's on a 486 DX2-66 used mostly to run win/dos games limited to cpu-cycles. It's fun having an unembellished W95 plus it's give you a perspective on the UI changes of later versions, W98 etc. I have W95osr2 running on P233 and P3-933 rigs, plus W98se on a P3-1.4, and a P4-3.6 rig, so the W9x bases are pretty well covered.

I'll give the Common Controls update a try - never heard of it before - thanks.

I'm perplexed too. I've never heard of a problem with msconfig on Win95 but it's been ages since I messed around with the pre-OSR2 versions.

Tincup, do you receive any error messages when attempting to run the msconfig EXE? Off-hand, you may also try the DCOM95 updates: DCOM95INST.EXE & Release Notes (via Archive.org).

No error messages, It just does nothing when you try to run msconfig. I have not tried the Common Controls update yet, so we'll see.

If you google W95a/msconfig you'll find a few people out that ran into the same issue way back when..

haha okay...

Extracted the exe and it's full of the upgrades that'll probably make it run on 'a'. I hope so. Will test out this last batch of stuff when back from the holiday... I'll start with the light common controls from the other day first.

Will report back later.

Well msconfig is now working on W95a. I intended to install Common Controls first, then test msconfig, but I accidentally installed MSINFO95 first.

msconfig did not run after MSINFO95 was installed/re-booted, but after installing Common Controls and re-booting, it did.

So I'm not sure if it was Common Controls alone, or the combo of it and MSINFO95, but msconfig now runs.. nice, thanks everyone.
