Ok I have the cd version of this and really want the speech to work. I owned the disk version when I was a kid and loved it. I purchased the cd version just so I could play it again with speech. i am able to get it to install and play, but the speech slider in the game options will not even turn on. Music play fine just can not get the speech to work. This is not a downloaded rip or anything. I have the original physical cd so no chance of missing the voice files. Please any help I can get would be wonderful. Thanks in advance.

I played the talkie CD version entirely off the hard drive. To do this, edit Legend.ini file and change the pathways to the location on your hard drive, then copy the files from the CD to that location. It takes about 188MB of disk space.

Also, try running the game with this dos command line: XANTH BLASTER 7. And edit your dosbox configuration file and test with this parameter setting: cycles=5000. You may also disable music.

Thanks for the reply. I still can't seem to get it working. Here is what my ini file looks like.

MOUSE=MOUSE
MUSIC=MUSIC
SOUND=BLASTER 7 220
GAMEDATA=D:\XANTH\
SAVEDATA=D:\XANTH\

The whole cd is copied to the Xanth folder. About to try and edit the dosbox config to 5000 cycles.

Tried editing the config for dosbox, no luck. Changed several values with sound and no effect. This is kinda upseting, I spent a good bit of time and money trying to find the cd version.

Well i don't know about a 60 sec guide. D:/ is the correct path. I am using LaunchBox to launch my games. I have tried with the physical cd mounted and with a iso mounted. Both have same effect. I would be happy if I could just get it working and saving the iso on my hard drive to run it from. Here is the link for the program I am using, its just a frontend.

Ok just went over your 60 sec guide. Everything seems to be in place with your guide. With LaunchBox you pretty much just fill in the blanks, but it matches up with your guide. The only difference is I can not select C: to be a drive mounted. So I made my hard drive D: and cdrom E:

Huge Break Thru!!! I think its working now. I decided to double check the file size of the folder. For some reason it did not copy the cd over. I recopied it and tested. The voice option is not on. I got so excited I exited real quick before I even tested it. 🤣 Let me make sure the voices are in fact working and I will update my status. I'm still not sure why it wouldn't just work with the cd in the drive.

Ok voices are now working, but I am having a small problem. After about saying 1 or 2 words, it stops. The voices cut off and don't complete the sentences. Any clues on that?

Best to run without frontend and using default dosbox settings. Backup your previous dosbox configuration files and type this at dosbox prompt: config -writeconf dosbox.conf. Add the mount point so that the C drive has the XANTH/ directory. Delete the previous game copy and copy the game again from the CD-ROM. Verify LAUNCH.INI has the correct paths showing the C drive.

Then follow the procedure to configure sound. I believe the game is run from a batch (.BAT) file, but I don't have the game to test. Instead, you should try running this manually from the XANTH/ directory: XANTH BLASTER 7 220.

Ok ty u all so much!! That did the trick. I was still able to use the frontend but just by adding -writeconf dosbox.conf and XANTH BLASTER 7 220, It now works perfectly!! Thank you all again for the great help. 😀
