Civilization 1, sound works but its so slow

I downloaded the game from:

I had trouble getting the game to work with the soundblaster sound...i could get it working with no sound at correct speed but if sounblaster was selected then no sound would play and it also ran unbearably slow.
I then installed VDMSound and set the civ.exe to use VDMSound shortcut and then ran it... I then made it run using soundblaster and the sound actually played...but it was really really slow so that you couldnt actually play the game.. Is there any speed settings or ways i can get it to run faster now that ive finally got the sound to work?

Intel Pentium 3, Intel celleron 900mhz processor
256mb RAM
100GB 8MB cache Hard drive
Windows XP Home Edition
BIOS version 1.0
I have latest version of VDMSound

Try it again on DosBox and increase the cycles.. maybe running it at 8000 cycles should do it for ya.

I presume you haven't read the readme file, have you? *sigh*

No i have and ive tried running it on 8000 cycles and its still slow...even if i increase it to 20000 its slow...and 1000...doesnt make much of a difference

VDMSound+SPEEDSET should work just fine.
