most early nvidia cards, from riva128 to geforce3, had similarly fast dos performance, and all scored 360-380 realtics in the doom shareware demo3 test(the geforce2ultra seems to be the fastest and is a few tics faster than others). however, performance skydived since the geforce4 series, as they all scored over 600 realtics. anyone else noticed this and knows why?

Newer Nvidia cards limit DOS performance. Not much you can do about this apart from using AMD.

do you know if there is there a reason for this? is it to cut costs or make space for features that help modern games, just forgot to keep putting the features in or was it just arbitrary cause Nvidia hates old games?

Mau1wurf1977's list confirms the trend. Apart from few exceptions(a 7900GTX,a 8600GT & a Ti4200), there are no entries of Geforce 4 & above cards that score less than 600. I was actually stunned to see a GTX 570 hitting 1799 realtics(must be an oddity), hot on the heels of my GT520 PCI score.
The reason was already discussed in other threads, "VGA Core got removed in later nvidia series". Like you said, to give way/space for modern features more likely.
