Hi there,

I don't know if people aren't writing about success running this game because nobody writes happy stories, but there are a lot of posts saying Syndicate doesn't work (at least sound-wise). Here's a recount of my experiences:

- initially (without vdmsound) the game worked, but without sound
- couldn't get game to work at first with vdmsound, tried a lot of different things
- did a bit of hacking, discovered that the miles sound system dlls are supposed to be in the data dir, so I copied everything out of the main directory into DATA, since there were a few other files needed.
- then everything just worked -- make sure you are calling main.exe with the right irq, here are my settings:

.\main.exe /iirq5 /idma1 /iio$220 /c0

(obviously you need to set the irq to 5 in vdmsound)

Contact me through my website (http://bellyphant.com) if you want more details (or post here)

...?

Please paste your system specs. And I ask you, can you complete the game without it crashing?

Hi,

System specs are Athlon XP2100+, 8KHA+ m/b, Win XP, M-Audio Audiophile 2496 sound. Not particularly relevant, because I've got it working on two systems, and it's all done with DirectX anyway (v8).

I'm using all the latest stable (non-beta) VDMSound stuff.

I haven't tried completing the game yet (only got close to that 10 years ago!), but the first few missions play fine, absolutely no problems.

The speed is a little bit wonky, but I don't get any pauses after sounds play (this was on another thread).

The main problem with the version I had, was that the files were in the wrong place.

I can confirm this.

My friend and I downloaded syndicate last night from http://www.gamebird.dk ... it installed and played fine, but with no sound.

I read this post here and immediatly copied all the loose files in the main directory and pasted them to the data directory, then ran it with VDM sound defaults and I got sound/music.

There seems to be lag issues still with sound and I'm pretty sure I need to adjust some settings in VDM to get better sound quality, but it's working.

If I experience any major crashes with this I'll post back, after I get around to playing it for a while.

Hi guys, I'm interested to know how you are progressing. I got syndicate running OK aswell but when the missions had a lot of timebombs on the enemy agents it started to crash a lot. Some times it would only last a few seconds after the first timebomb went off. I'm working on a fix to take the timebomb sound out and replace it for some sort of gun shot just to make the thing playable, I just hope that doing this will make the difference.

I'm posting my progess on the thread titled: Syndicate OK, but freezes at SFX. If my (friends) idea does works then I will be posting the fixed sound file there.

Hope you are all having fun playing syndicate, I haven't enjoyed a game this much for a long time 😀 I'd just like to get past the half way mark now and finnish it 😀

I downloaded Syndicate from *SomeWhere* and it worked but no sound even with VDMS...

Then I found a boxed copy with the original disks in a charity shop and installed it from them - sound works fine for the most part but if there are two gun shots too close together you only hear one of them. But then I think it was always like that.

The music and sound is different from the Amiga version - the only version I had played up til now.

Also I hve noticed that the game slips a little bit - for instance when the borgs are running they slow down (hardly noticable) and then run again.

It has only crashed once (but I have just got it) that was after I saved and went to play a new mission. I pressed accept and the game swiched off and I was back at the desktop...

It is good to play it again at last 😁

for all those still having trouble getting this to work, try this (it took me hours, found hints on various boards):

- copy files from main to data subdirectory (like posted above)

- with the wrong dos4gw.exe i got various errors (from random crashes to sound not working). the one, that worked for me has 259 KB (found a .rar w some dos4gw.exe's here: showthread.php?threadid=214 - the working is named 1_97.EXE inside the archive)

- with VDMSound try this config (right click main.exe > run with vdmsound ; then edit the resulting main shortcut):
[program]
workdir=C:\games\syndc
params=/iirq5 /idma1/iio$220 /c0
executable=C:\games\syndc\main.exe
[vdms.sb.dsp]
IRQ=5
devOutType=1
devOutID=0
[winnt.dosbox]
exitClose=yes
[vdms.gameport]
enabled=no
[vdms.midi]
enabled=no
useSysExLed=no
useDevOut=no
sysExLed=Scroll
[vdms.sb.fm]
enabled=yes
useDevOut=yes
[winnt.video]
useVESA=yes
[winnt.storage]
useNetware=no

this worked for me - with sound - on win2k/amd1800+/512mb (played about 7 missions - still no problems)

good luck ; )

YES!!! I found Syndicate Plus in my basement while looking for something else.

I got the VDMS program to work perfectly no problems.

I'm running:

Windows XP Pro
Pentium 4 3.0C (hyperthreading)
Soundblaster Audigy
Visiontek GeForce4 Ti4600 video card

I'm so happy I found this site. Good job guys.

Hmm... the crashing problem with the time bombs it totally unrelated to the sound; I've had it before I got my sound working (thanks for that, wewt!). I just used lasers in certain missions to evaporate enemy agents, so they don't drop anything. It helps 😀

btw, with this I can run the game perfectly without VDMS...
