It happened because the game crashed/exited and you chose not to "close the DOS box on exit". You have to identify why the game crashed -- what game(s) are we talking about?

Working: Wolfenstein 3D
Indiana Jones & The Fate of Atlantis
Duke Nukem 2

Games that does not work:
ROTT
Duke3D

I have installd the lunch pad and the update but it still not working... 🙁 but it's the big old games who does not work... (the cool old clasics)

Everyting is freezing at the start... With some setings the screen goes black only but with other settings I get the logo up(duke3d)...

No ROTT
No Duke3d

in Windows 2000 with SFX.

You can play them in 2000 without SFX and can even hax0r the files with CLI2NOP but the game WILL crash and crash so often that they are barely playable.

You can play these games in XP but with crappy audio and no higher resolutions.

Your BEST option is Connectix Virtual PC or to run them in REAL DOS.

You still haven't given us an overview of your system or even your OS. Those are essential for troubleshooting purposes.

A good example is the reference to Duke3D, which can be run relatively stable in XP, but not in Windows 2000. When you don't give us this info we're reduced to guessing or playing "20 Questions" to get info about your setup.

If you're running NT or 2000, Duke3D will run fine so long as you don't use any Digital audio (I think you can use General MIDI for music).

If you want sound effects it requires a rather nasty hack, and most wouldn't find it worth it.

XP has a work-around, but it's still pretty poor audio.

Also, don't forget that 2000/XP don't support as many VESA screenmodes as Win9x did. That frequently means sticking with low-resolution modes.

I say this a lot, but a dual-boot is the closest thing to a magic bullet for this.

BTW, you still haven't specified what OS you're using here.

Yeah, on WinXP you can install "Update 1" for VDMSound (search forum for "Update 1" for link and instructions) and Duke, Doom etc. should start working (with VDMSound). Needs CLI2NOP under Win2k and NT4, though.

"Update 1" will work with VDMSound and Doom/Duke/etc. under Windows XP. So try upgrading to XP before downgrading to 9x.

If he's trying to run a BUILD game, it will run on XP, but not nearly as well as DOS/Win9x.

I'll keep saying it until someone has a better option. Dual boot between DOS/Win9x and 2000/XP. I can run Blood at 800x600 with 32 Voices at 44KHz. To run it on XP, I have to set it to 320x200 (none of the VESA modes work) and all audio settings to the near minimum to work properly.

Uh, dude, Active Desktop has been around since Windows 98 (95?), and the fancy start menu can be fixed by using a mix of TweakUI and turning off "Personalised Menues" in "Start > Settings > Taskbar and Start Menu..." (at least that's how it works in W2K with the less-fancy,-although-too-fancy-for-my-tastes menu). Still, that doesn't forgive Microsoft for all the other regressions in XP, like the ugly colour scheme, the crappy SB emulation, and the rediculous amounts of spyware. (Oh, yeah -- and the activation, and the other monopoly features shoved in there "because they can".)

Yes, it’s my fault.

Are you drunk? We're talking about Windows XP and how much it sucks, not that! Honestly, Stiletto.

Yes, it’s my fault.
