If you are willing you could give a x1900 series ATI card a try, they are screamers in their own right but they had their advantages and even cooled my hard drives when I had one back in the day.

If you saw no improvement from a Ti 4400 then you were most likely cpu-bound. This is especially apparent if the anti-aliasing gains were free.
