Hi all 😀

I recently bought a roland sc55 for my 486 pc config and i can't get it to work.

I have a gameport -> midi cable.

I plug the port (15 pins) on the gameport of my AWE64 then i plug the midi port "out" in the input "in" of the sc55 and vice versa.

i put "sound canvas" in the setup of doom and run the game.

No song. Nothing on the sc55 screen.

I did something wrong ?

Did you check the I/O (should be 2/9 ideally) and IRQ (should be 330 ideally) for the MPU-401? Does the MPU-401 conflict with anything else? Good luck! Do you see any MIDI input on the SC-55 LED? Did you connect speakers to the SC-55? There is no need whatsoever for MIDI OUT from the SC-55 to MIDI IN to the AWE32 BTW.

He is using a AWE64 card, not an Roland MPU-401, meaning IRQ is irrelevant if the rest of the soundcard as been setup correctly.

1. Do regular sound work in Doom?
2. CTCM is run in autoexec.bat?
3. I/O address are the same in config and Doom setup?

Of course it matters. When you play to MPU-401 it utilizes both IRQ and I/O. Regardless of whether it is software or hardware.

Using AWE64 I would highly recommend you set IRQ to the default 5 to make it easier for games using general MIDI to recognize it by default. The 2/9 IRQ is for much older games using LA synth.

While interrupts may be generated, only a very small number (~20) of old games use them.
They're not relevant to any game that natively supports Sound Canvas.

The only cable that needs to be connected is the MIDI out from the AWE into the MIDI in on the SC.

Now the AWE64 has a jumper to enable internal GM emulation. Check if this jumper is set or not. I can't remember what it's called but I made a video about enabling GM emulation: http://youtu.be/t0OIW0YpS1c

So the jumper should be the set to the opposite as in this video 😀

well maybe it's a dead sc-55 , the same connection rules for the mt-32 apply to the sc-55 as well...

edit: try playing the build-in demo songs, do they work?

HOW TO LISTEN TO ROM PLAY
Demo songs that make the best use of the internal Multi-timbre sounds are stored within the Sound Canvas. The process of auto-playing these demo songs is called ROM play.

1. While holding PART < and > , turn the power on. “Init GS, Sure?” will be shown in the display.
2. Press ALL to execute (Press MUTE to stop the operation).
3. Select a song with the PART < and > buttons.
4. Press ALL to start the song. The volume level of each instrument will be shown on the bar graph display. All songs will be played in order beginning with the song you chose.
5. Press MUTE to stop playback.
6. Press ALL and MUTE simultaneously to return to normal playing status.

There is likely something on Wikipedia. But honestly almost every game after Strike Commander / Day of The Tentacle / Space Quest 5 will support GM.
