Another I just noticed, s-a-t-a or saa-tah? p-a-t-a or paa-tah? I hear the latter and cringe. Do they say eyed-e or id-e? No, they say i-d-e, but switch for SATA and PATA.

I hate it when people try to make every acronym sound like a word. You should only say it as a word if it sounds good....like SCSI.

I like the people who used to call every 16-bit ISA slot an "EISA" slot because they had never seen a 32-bit EISA slot before and just assumed that AT bus was an extension of XT bus and was therefore EISA.

I also don't like hearing about "ice uh" slots. It's "I S A' damnit.

Reminds me of a co-worker, about ~10 years ago, he was a bit of a strange bloke.

He said something about a 'pc card'. So I asked him what he meant, and he goes 'ha! that's a question from the younger generation!'

Turns out he was referring to a 16-bit ISA card. I knew exactly what ISA was, I'd just never heard of it referred to that way. The context was an old SCSI card for a scanner IIRC.

If anything I'd have expected 'PC Card' to refer to an 8 bit ISA card.

But yeah, I've always said 'three eight six', 'four eight six', etc.
I had friends that called executable files 'exksies' but I always said 'E X E'.

I also say 'directories' and never 'folders'.

I've never heard someone say exksies before. I'm used to hearing exec, short for executable, which makes sense, doesn't bug me, but sayee-tuh/payee-tuh saa-tuh/paa-tuh just sounds stupid to me.

I've never heard of a "PC card" to refer to ISA before. This is PC card as I know it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PC_card
Maybe that's what 8-bit ISA was called before the XT came out. I know the busses between 1983 and 1988 were referred to as "XT bus" and "AT bus" before EISA came out. Were the cards called "XT cards" and "AT cards"? Maybe I should read some really old byte magazines to find out.

SATA = Saytah
IDE = Eyed
ISA = Eyesuh
BIOS = Bye-Ohce
GB = Gigga-byte (hard G sound)

For directories I say directories or folders, it depends on who I am speaking to. For Executables I say program(s) or E-X-E(s).
I don't have a hard set rule on many ways to say stuff, as long as I can understand you that's good enough. 🤣

Those are the only ones I can think of but there are probably more. 😜

Mostly pretty conventional; - if the acronym easily sound like a word I'll go with that, otherwise the shorter ones get spelled out. There are exceptions. Here's some off the top of my head:

I also don't like GUI being read as "gooey". That's the last thing I want to think of when I'm using a public PC.

I've always said "F-A-Q" for FAQ, but if I said it as a word it would definitetly be "Fuck you".

Ugh I hate it when people say gooey also. 🤣

I just say Fack for FAQ. Middy for MIDI. I always mistakenly say ascii as "assy" but someone always corrects me 🤣.

Reboot also has influenced some pronunciations 😀

Belgians say quatre-vingt too (but use septante and nonante for 70 and 90). Swiss folks use huitante, and octante, the most logical one, is obsolete everywhere AFAIK 😀.

For me, and as far as I can remember, it's always been :

Eight - O - Eight - Eight
Two - Eight - Six
Three - Eight - Six

and

Four - Eight - Six.

Yeah! But it's more like "FourEightSix" as it was a single word 😁
