Hey,

I decided to start up sq1 a few days ago, played some and then tried to save (you know, hit F5 etc.) but instead of getting the screen where you can choose what slot to save in, it immediately picks the first slot. I can still save but only in the first slot. Restoring has the same problem.
Now there's away around this: I can just save in the first slot and overwrite every time or if I really want multiple save games I can put the save games in a different folder every time, but I'd like to solve this because I don't know how this problem affects other in game things.
The version of sq1 I'm using is the one from the SQ collection CD, just copied the SQ1 files from the CD into a folder on my HD (this used to work just fine)

I uninstalled and reinstalled DOSBox, to no avail.
I did notice some strange things:
First: I couldn't delete the DOSBox folder after uninstall, so I ran unlocker which said conime.exe was blocking it
Second: After reinstalling I noticed my mount lines in the config file were still there! Whatever I do (uninstalling, manually deleting all related files, restarting pc, even checking the registry) these lines keep appearing whenever I reinstall
Also I'm using Vista

Thanks

From a quick check it looks like Conime.exe is part of Windows for Asian language support, but is often targeted/replaced by malware. It also looks like it may be also associated with eMule (file sharing). In any case, it should not be touching the DOSBox folder. You may want to scan your PC for malware. If it is clean, Download and install the official DOSBox from dosbox.com and start over with your CD.

If you still have trouble, you will need to provide a little more information. Which collection? Which version of the game? What were your mount commands?

As for your mounts being still present, you probably missed the location of the config in c:/Users/Username/etc... (Not on Windows anymore so I'm not keeping that folder location in memory - someone else will need to say or look at the readme, I think that lists the folder path as well)

Collector:

Already checked up on conime.exe. Malwarebytes doesn't find any problem with it and it's the right size, 69,120 bytes.
Also found this about conime in relation to DOSBox:

About the collection:
It's the 1997 collection series which includes SQ1 through 6 (2 CDs). It's European (includes French and German versions of SQ5 and bought it in Belgium). Also SQ2 from this CD has the exact same problem. If I remember correctly I couldn't get it to work in Vista so I always copied the contents of SQ1EGA to my HD and ran it through DOSBox (always worked fine).
It's the EGA version of SQ1.

Mount lines:
mount c d:\gamesdos
c:
cd sq
sierra or sq

Dominus:
Yes I know about that, after uninstalling I searched my computer for DOSBox config. This turned up nothing. Also checked c:/Users/Username/etc..., no DOSBox files remaining

I know it's a strange problem, all I can think of to do next is trying the CDs on another computer (which I'm sure will work fine) or wipe my HD and reinstall Windows etc. but that's a bit drastic

Hmm, can you check your dosbox shortcut whether it points to some custom config? Also the console window should show the config being used as well.

When copying off the CD make sure the foles are not left write protected (common problem)

Got back from work and checked C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\DOSBox after uninstalling DOSBox. 2 files there, the config file and something else, deleted them and reinstalled. SQ1 save problem solved! Can't remember what the second file was and already deleted it from trash, pretty stupid.
Thanks Dominus for the console window thing and making me go back to check.

I wonder what that second file was. I used Reset Options.bat multiple times so the problem wasn't in the config file. Could the second file have been a key map config file?

Thanks a lot Collector and Dominus

Yes, most likely a map file. Still srange that this caused problems with sq.

Oh well, it works now and that is great 😉
