I know, yet another sound card thread.
First, the one sound card rule does not imply that you cannot have as many external synths as you want. Second, you may still have a MPU-401 card or a sound card that only provides that functionality and not sound.
So, if you could only have one sound card, what would it be and why?
What brought this up for me is today I was playing with my new DOS Box from scratch and I decided to play around. I installed an Audician 32 sound card with a Yamaha YMF718-S chip and fired up Doom. I was just so content listening to the OPL3's FM music and the sound effects. I am still waiting on my Sound Blaster Pro 2.0 to show up so I can try it out. You guys know a lot more than I do about this stuff and have listened to so many more cards and games than I have. I like hearing about what you like but more importantly why you like it.
So for me, as of right now, I'm going to say the YMF718-S. It sounds nice to me, has real OPL, works in DOS without taking up a lot of memory (or any memory?) and doesn't need Emm386. It has AdLib, SB, SB Pro and WSS compatibility even if not 100%, I am hearing it is very close. And lastly I read it has good SoftMPU support (including IRQ 2/9 support which some games require) for intelligent MPU-401 interface if I should ever get a real Roland MT-32.
Look forward to hearing from you!
