Well, my 5.25" drive just died on me. Not much of a problem, they aren't really that expensive, but while shopping for them I started thinking maybe I'd get a different model (Teac FD55-GFR.) Mainly because the way I have to mount them in the case, and the plug on the back of the Teac's facing, the cable has to basically double twist between the 3.5" & 5.25" drives to connect correctly to both, then has to do another twist at the MB. Many of the drives I'm looking at, the edge connector is reversed making connecting everything up a lot simpler.
So, anyone know anything about floppy drive compatibility? Back in the day, I never worried about it, I just took whatever drive was there. But I've been reading about some drives that just won't handle non-standard formats (Archon is 200K for example.) I've heard of drives that only handle 360K or 1.2M (and sometimes not even both of those.) Never mind the 8 sector (320K) or single sided (160K 180K) formats. My Teac has lasted me 20 years, and has never failed to read or write anything I've asked it too (barring bad media of course.) So, I'm tempted not to risk it and just go with another of the same model, but thought I'd ask first 😀
