Im about to buy a bunch of cards looking like the one in this picture.

If someone knows anything about these cards I would be grateful for any information.
I am thinking the Crystal chip is a remarked Vortex 2 and I would like a few more of those.
If it isnt I think I will still buy the cards, they are cheap... 😀

That's a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz (Crystal SoundFusion CS46xx). I have one, currently being used in my Pentium 4 Northwood rig:

Not a bad choice if you like to listen to PC audio a lot. Very quiet, and the wavetable header works great (I have a TB Cancun FX on mine). Window games are kind of hit and miss; some work great, others have problems (stuttering/skipping/delayed/incomplete sound effects and/or music). DOS sound emulation is lousy (lots of crashes/freezing, some games can't find it). For Windows, the cs_4193 WDM drivers are the best choice for me; they work with Win98SE, WinME, Win2k and WinXP. I don't know if it works with Vista or Win7 32 bit (no drivers available for 64 bit versions).

Hope this helps 😀

Thanks.

They are sold in a package with lots of other old PCI sound crads so I will probably buy them anyway. Some of the cards in the lot looks like SB 64/128 PCI and I am hoping to find a SB-link capable one just to try it out. I were misled by a Polish site that had this card named as a Videologic card. A shame some people cant take decent pictures of the stuff they sell.

Well Skyscraper, I don't think the Polish site was trying to mislead you. Because in fact, the Videologic Sonic Fury and Turtle Beach Santa Cruz use the same exact sound card design (they even use the same markings and lettering in the back)! 😲

I was puzzled by what you said about the Sonic Fury pic so I went to do a little Google search for it, and found this old review of the card itself:

http://www.hardware-one.com/print_review.asp?reviews=193

And this is what took me by surprise completely:

Currently, the Cirrus Logic DSP is used in only two soundcards, the Videologic Sonic Fury and the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. The soundcard was designed jointly by Cirrus Logic, Turtle Beach and Videologic, and in fact, my Sonic Fury card bears markings of the Santa Cruz!

Right below that sentence you can see a picture of the Sound Fury's back. It's exactly the same as my Santa Cruz! The only reason I never knew about this is that the Sonic Fury was never sold in the US, only in Europe. And since both sound cards look exactly the same, pics of one can be used to represent both. The differences lie with the retail box, drivers, and software bundle. This also means that the Turtle Beach WDM drivers won't work with the Sonic Fury; only the Videologic drivers will work. I'm sorry about the confusion 😢

Same is same.

There must be a workaround for the driver issue... if it is an issue, perhaps the Videologic drivers are better 😀

I did consider trying out Videologic drivers at one time, but was told by some here at Vogons no to do this; then I found this warning from Turtle Beach themselves:

http://support.turtlebeach.com/entry/58521404 … 044&Msg=&ajax=1

I quickly gave up that idea after reading that.

I also have to correct myself about using TB WDM drivers for the Sonic Fury after reading a number of archived forum topics from 2000-2001 on Google; it's actually recommended to install them, especially for Windows XP. It appears the Videologic drivers are buggy with XP.

I'm about to reconfigure my P4 build and reinstall Win98SE from scratch; this will give me a chance to try out the sc_4081 VXD drivers again. If they work better in games than the WDM drivers then I'll keep them; if not, then I'll go back to sc_4193.
