thinking of upgrading my 8086 machine to a V30. it runs at 5mhz and has a 10mhz "speed" button. I will be using it mostly for mid/late 80's EGA games. I mostly want the chip so I can run things like a ZIP drive that do not seem to work on a regular 8088/86.

question is anyone know roughly how fast a v30 at 5mhz is compared to a 4.77mhz 8088? anyone think this will mess up speed/timings on many games? Ultima is a good example of what I'll be playing on it. seems to play fine on this machine now but already plays to fast if I kick it into 10mhz mode with the 8086

Since no one has bothered to answer just go for it and if it ends up being too fast for some games you can find a way to slow it down. Looks like a really nice chip for its time and found its away into a Lot of machines.

I think i had that same question few days ago. But what i can say, the V serie processors are not expensive anymore.. Best bet is buying one en trying it out.. Then if you can make the conclusion if it would run to fast, you always can switch back if you want.

true. good thing China seems to have an endless supply of 80's and 90's PC chips. a V30 on a good 16 bit board should be just slightly slower then a 286 so I'm guessing a 5mhz v30 may be equivalent to a 4mhz 286.

Only keep till 10mhz ones.. Above 10mhz would indeed be much faster as you not wanted.
