Hi all.
I still have my old amd 5x86 cpu. I want to test it out, yet I don't have my old original mobo anymore.
Can this cpu go into a SS7 motherboard with mvp3 chipset? Wich is like the oldest mobo I have.

No. It needs a socket 3 motherboard.
It is essentially a 486

Thanks. That was what I thought as well. The thing that made me doubt, was that I remember it as a cpu wich were rated as an Pentium.

Absolutely not.

You need a Socket 3 motherboard that supports 3.3V/3.45V or use an adapter. Some old 486 motherboards might only do 5V.

The only processor on socket 3 that would be the same like a `pentium` (same achitecture) are the pentium overdrives..

Yes, that was the marketing angle at the time alright. It even says P75 to make it seem like its performance is equivalent to a Pentium 75, but that's only true in some cases. The FPU performance is lower than a real Pentium 75.

Just as I remember it...
Wasn't quite shure as how it really is.
Too bad, they did not make SS7 do 486's.
Now I am not shure what to do with my CPU.
Might sell it. One never know's.

they never made socket 4, 5, 6 or slot 1 486s either.

I would personally get a slot 3 board and make a build with it.

I am slightly interested in it otherwise but I think the shipping would hardly make it worth it sending it to America

For integer heavy games (for example Descent, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D -not a line of FPU code there) or productivity applications the 5x86 was indeed Pentium-like for performance. The only pre-1997 game that really shows its weaknesses is Quake. So it is not a bad chip by any means and miles ahead of something like the 486/66 DX2,

Yeah.... I remember now. That was why I only had that CPU in my main computer back then, and replaced it with an K6-2 500.
Just could not remember wich computer I had that cpu in. Now I remember that I bought it and upgraded the cpu on my 486 machine.

True!! Unless the cpu was a really expensive piece of hardware, the shipping to another continent is actually pretty stupid, regarding the cost.
I know stuff is sometimes 10 times higher on Ebay, than the alternative online marketplace, that we have here in Denmark.
I guess, the cpu is teh equivelant of two to three us dollars in Denmark, and on Ebay it's slightly higher.
Never the less.... It's a fine and beautifull piece of hardware. Might just keep it, if I need to make a display like my wall ornament that I have.
