Running Windows XP here, I'm trying to play a legitimately-obtained version of Princess Maker 2 (yo hablo Japanese), which has notorious sound emulation problems on modern hardware. If I play it in XP's default DOS emulator, the game runs perfectly fine...but has absolutely no sound.

I just downloaded the latest version of DOSBox yesterday and managed to get sound working in PM2, but there's absolutely no visuals! DOSBox just has black nothingness, but I know the game is running because the sound works; it goes through the splash screens, then to the main menu, etc.

I tried opening dosbox-0.74.conf and changing the sdl output to all the different options (surface, overlay, opengl, openglnb, ddraw) with no luck. I also messed around with a few other options, like enabling and disabling full screen, changing the resolution, etc. to no avail.

Any ideas?

Can there be a legitimate copy of PM2?

The leaked beta of the English version by SoftEgg/Adventions is not legit, but the thread starter seems to refer to the original Japanese version by Gainax, which could be legit.

It's not necessarily the case, but it is possible the Japanese version requires DOS/V support that is not built into DOSBox. If DOS/V is owned then one can try booting it in DOSBox, but if only font support is needed then there are TSRs like DOS-J that can provide such.

Nothing was said about how the game is being installed and run, so of course it could simply be a matter of following the 60 seconds guide. Other things to try are running the game in an SVN build, and a debugger build to see if any video mode related debug messages stand out.
