Hello Vogons,

I did benchmark of 31 ISA VGA cards with 3DBench2, PCPlayer Bench, Doom and VSpeed.

For convenience I put it into this PDF file:
ftp://78.46.141.148/docs/eliandas_isa_vga_roundup.pdf

file.php?mode=view&id=16345&sid=110a1044148ce98f1147253aa4cfbd8a

file.php?mode=view&id=16340&sid=110a1044148ce98f1147253aa4cfbd8a

file.php?mode=view&id=16346&sid=110a1044148ce98f1147253aa4cfbd8a

file.php?mode=view&id=16348&sid=110a1044148ce98f1147253aa4cfbd8a

technical details can be found in the pdf.

Nice! 😀

I'm kinda surprised by the good performance of the Trident 8900D.

Some peculiar results, how does a CL5422 beat a CL5428 on some. or are they dependent on the raw CPU to card memory performance which may not reflect advances in the Windows accelerator ... a 5428 is significantly more advanced than a 5422

This is not about performance if used as Windows Accelerator. Also be aware that not just the chipset plays a role, also internal clock, memory timings on the card a.s.o.
For an average ISA card it is not so easy to get this information.
So it can be that this 5422 is faster with ModeX in Doom than the 5428.

AFAIK the D revision added memory FIFOs, increasing the performance to a lot higher levels.

Excellent work! Should help a lot of people in choosing what card they want to go with.

Good work... I would also like to see how far can you "overclock" the ISA bus so the card would still work. On a slower system (386DX) this doesn't always have a big affect but with faster ones it does.

I have mixed results with Trident 8900D 1MB cards... some could be almost as fast as Tseng 4000 and some are way slower.

Requests here!

I know with ATi cards, there is a configuration program that lets you set the bus as 8/16 bit and the BIOS as 8/16 bit. The default settings aren't necessarily the optimal ones.

I took the VGAWonderXL for benching out of one of my 386 systems. When I configured it I also went through the configuration tool (e.g. I disabled the Bus Mouse). As the Ati graphics Ultra scores nearly identical the configuration should be also good.

A small correction:
The CL-GD410 based card is a Video Seven VEGA and the CL-GD510 based card is a Video Seven VEGA VGA.
(They are both named VEGA VGA in the list)

There is definitively a better Paradise card missing.
