Hello! I'm trying to get DOSBox up to run some old PC games I've downloaded as .exe files and I can't seem to get them to cooperate. I tried following the Guides and the wiki but they mainly discuss mounting a CD, which I don't need to do, and my forum searches have turned up out-of-date help for older versions of OS X and DOSBox and they haven't been applicable.

I'm running Mac OS X 10.9.5 and the latest DOSBox 0.74 for Mac.

First thing, I can't locate the /Library/Preferences/DOSBox Preferences file it says is created when you first run DOSBox. I looked under my user (there isn't even a Library folder), as well as the root Library. I don't know how to get/find a file that's not there. I'd really love to get shortcuts going for part two here...

Second, what's the process to run an .exe file? In my various attempts, I keep getting an "Illegal command" notice on DOSBox. I'm unsure if this is related to the Preference file not being there or what.

Thanks in advance!

First of all we don't help with illegal downloads, second, ~/library is hidden in OS X 10.7 and later (in finder menu click on go while holding down ALT/options) - well known fact.
And then just make sure you mount the folder you have your exe in. No actual need for the config.
If it still doesn't work, please make a screenshot with Finder showing the exe and the Dosbox Window when you try to start it (along with your mountings). Preview makes a good screenshoter.

None of my downloads are illegal. I don't know what made you think that. I paid for them through legal means. Also, it's not often I dig into system files, so I'm sorry I'm unaware of your "well known fact."

I've attached the screencaps requested. As far as I can tell, everything is in order. I don't know what the problem is. Any tips are appreciated.

If you paid for them via gog you should rather downliad their OS X disks.
What you are trying to run is not the dos game but rather a Windows installer for the game. You need to Windows to install that.
The reason I mentioned illegal downloads is that when people first come here and mention downloads and exe files it's warez in 99% of the cases.

Well known fact, it is one 😉 you could have just googled for "no library folder" and probably got hundreds of hits...
