Hey guys got a little problem with a Sony Trinitron CRT I brought home. I tried adjusting all the trimmers I could find but it seems it only has horizontal and vertical hold and a single focus knob. The horizontal adjust did nothing to remedy it, it just squashed the picture a bit.

Any idea what is causing this, I'm probably going to toss this CRT back in the junk heap I dug it out of but I would like to know for future reference.

Thanks!

Here's a picture of exactly whats going on:

That can easily be a video card or VGA cable problem. Otherwise it is probably something early in the input stage

I suggest trying good quality VGA cable first if it is detachable, then lower refresh rate and/or resolution.
If the monitor has BNC inputs, you should try them as well with a good quality cable.

If you mean those horizontal "ghosts" to the right side of text and other small detail, I think it might be a design defect in Trinitron monitors. I've had two Trinitrons (years ago) and they both started exhibiting that flaw. It was not cable or video card dependent. The ghosting would go away if you pulled the monitor VGA connector from side to side or up and down so that the internal PCB moved slightly. The problem also went away for a while after cleaning away all the accumulated dust.

I had a Dell flat CRT monitor that had the same issue. It was mostly noticeable on the windows title bars and other long horizontal color bars. I was quite annoyed at first but since this was practically invisible on games and videos I ended up just ignoring it. If it is barely noticeably on that monitor too then you could just ignore it.
