Is there a way to patch old programs, so that the sound works without installing VDMS?

If there were, why would Vlad have bothered coding VDMSound? In other words, No.

The closest thing to that are the (very) rare cases where the game company might provide an audio update. Unfortunately, they're still DOS-audio; which means you still need way to make it work with "modern" PC's.

If the source code for a game is released, you might see a Windows "remake". This is also rare.

Jason, you have managed to COMPLETELY miss the problem. The problem is that Windows NT doesn't allow interface between programs and the hardware directly. You can't patch a DOS program and expect it to magically be able to interface with hardware like it thinks it can.

Yes, it’s my fault.
